The new Alta California line of tinctures includes high CBD (Healing), balanced CBD/THC (Tranquility), and high THC (Euphoria).

A California-based company has introduced three cannabis based medicinal extracts (CBMEs), also known as tinctures, derived from organic plant material. They offer patients a choice of low, medium or high euphoric component THC, balanced with the healing cannabinoid CBD.

According to CBD Science LLC, based in San Francisco, “These are the first CBME products on the market with certified potency and purity, scientifically calibrated and documented.”
Steep Hill Lab certifies the propylene glycol (“double alcohol”) CBMEs as Safe Cannabis™, free of pesticides and mold. The lab also documents potency through THC and CBD levels.
The CMBE products, branded Alta California, are so far available to patients with valid recommendations at the following nonprofit dispensaries: Medithrive in San Francisco; Crème De Canna in Santa Cruz; and Magnolia Wellness in Orangevale, California.

The extracts are available as sprays or drops, in three blends. The Healing Tincture has the highest ratio of CBD. Tranquility Tincture contains equal amounts of CBD and THC, and Euphoria Tincture is high in THC with a lower CBD value.
Honey is added to the tincture for sweetness, and peppermint for flavor.

The Healing Tincture offers a 5:1 CBD to THC radio, with 10 milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml) of CBD and 2 mg/ml of THC. The balanced formula, Tranquility Tincture, has 5 mg/ml each of THC and CBD, and Euphoria Tincture has 10 mg/ml of THC and .5 mg/ml of CBD.
CBD Science’s Alta-California CBMEs are delivered using two different methods: sublingual and digestive.
Sublingual (under the tongue) delivery is recommended for patients who need quick relief and want a mild experience. With sublingual ingestion, the majority of active herbal alkaloids are absorbed through your mucous membrane system into your bloodstream quite quickly. The remaining alkaloids are absorbed into your bloodstream via the digestive system. This method of delivery is fast, and generates a smooth, gentle experience, lasting from two to three hours.
Digestive delivery (drinking the tincture) is for patients who want long-lasting relief and a powerful, deep experience. All the alkaloids are absorbed into your bloodstream via your digestive system when using this method. It is not as fast as the sublingual method, but it is “deeper” and longer-lasting, generating a consistently deeply experience lasting four to six hours.

According to CBD Science, ingesting their Alta California tinctures through the digestive system produces heightened psychoactivity compared to sublingual ingestion. This is because, once swallowed, a tincture passes from the stomach to the small intestine before being absorbed into the bloodstream (for a tincture, this process happens more quickly than with a typical edible, since solid food typicall doesn’t have to be digested).
Following absorption, the tincture passes through the liver, where a significant proportion is metabolized into other chemicals. One of these metabolites, 11-hydroxy-THC, may be four to five times more potent than natural THC. Thus, patients administered a tincture “digestively” may experience the psychoactive effects of bothy THC and 11-hydroxy-THC.
When asked her opinion on the medical use of marijuana, the U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., MBA was quoted by The New York Times: “There is evidence that shows it’s useful for medicine, but we need to investigate how to avoid the adverse effects of smoking marijuana.”
“Our CBMEs answer the Surgeon General’s call,” said Albert L. Coles, Jr., founder of CBD Science.
CBD Science products cannabis based medicinal extracts to be taken orally, a healthy alternative to traditional smoking.
These botanical tinctures, derived from organic plant material, deliver the benefits of medical marijuana effectively and inexpensively. Based on clinically studied formulas, dosages are precise, and results are consistent, according to CBD Science.
