Ana Izquierdo, better known as La Reina de Mota (“the queen of marijuana” in Spanish) has been a longtime advocate for cannabis as a remedy for certain forms of trauma and other mental health diagnoses. Izquierdo herself has survived her own struggles, such as drug addiction in her early adult life and fighting homelessness for five years. After seeing how cannabis positively impacted her own life and personal battles, she decided to dive head-first into different avenues in Colorado’s new industry, from cannabis fashion to social responsibility with other cannabis industry leaders.
My mother would’ve quashed any hint of homophobia in our house, but thanks to Freddie Mercury, she didn’t have to. Queen songs such as “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You” made Mercury one of my role models as a child, and learning that he died of AIDS days after I was born was like finding out that Santa Claus wasn’t real: I couldn’t fathom it. But that also made him even more supernatural in my eyes.
After a heavy week of sleep and sadness thanks to indica-leaning joints of Death Star and the ending of the new Star Wars movie, I decided to blast off with a much more uplifting variety. Space Queen, a fruity hybrid of Cinderella 99 and Romulan, always takes me on a giggle-ridden journey to the moon — without the crushing fall back to Earth.
Space Queen has many enjoyable traits, but my favorite is easily the smell. Even people who don’t like the usual stank of cannabis tend to appreciate a whiff of the warm combination of apples, berries, sandalwood, cheese or butterscotch, depending on the cut — but you’ll find fruity notes in all of them. The strain’s terpene profile is dominated by caryophyllene and humulene — also found in cinnamon, cloves, coriander, ginger and hops — which makes for calming aromatic effects, despite Space Queen’s being a sativa.

In recent weeks, around a thousand marijuana dispensaries across the states of California, Colorado, and Washington have received a marketing flyer advertising a partnership opportunity with the 3rd richest man in the world, Warren Buffet.
Well, it’s not exactly a partnership, and the flyers didn’t exactly come from Mr. Buffet himself, and really, they weren’t even aimed primarily at the dispensaries they were sent to. But with weed growing faster than warehouse space, Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary Cubic Designs, Inc. has stepped into the industry with a proven solution that promises to double the yield on each harvest.

The 2014 High Times Cannabis Cup ran this past weekend in Denver, with tens of thousands of people showing up to get high, get happy and celebrate our favorite plant and the recent legalization of cannabis use and sales in Colorado over the last few years.
As always, the event is also the time for cannabis product makers to show off their goods. Below are our top ten eleven pipes, bongs, vaporizers and other devices on sale over the weekend.

Missourians may not be able to legally smoke marijuana for quite some time, but it’s not because drag queens aren’t doing their part. At the Attitudes nightclub in the Grove, a contingent of drag queens and burlesque dancers hosted a benefit for Show-Me Cannabis Sunday night, when all door charges and tips from dancing and drinks went to the marijuana-legalization group.
Siren, the drag-queen emcee and promoter who organized the event, says she was approached by John Payne, executive director of Show-Me Cannabis, about the possibility of doing a drag and burlesque show. The Riverfront Times has the full story.
Andrea Sanderlin’s grow operation. |
Andrea Sanderlin, the New York mom accused earlier this summer of running a multimillion dollar marijuana ring, has pled guilty to operating a grow facility in Queens.
Sanderlin, who many in the media joked was the real-life version of the Showtime series “Weeds”, confessed to her “crimes” Tuesday, admitting to running the grow house for nearly four years.

Australian pro surfer Mark Richardson busts his ass in the water to compete in the rarified air of the elite pro levels. Not just compete, mind you, win. In 2011 Richardson won the World Masters Championship after a grueling six-elimination heat competition.
But according to the International Surfing Association, he cheated because he had THC in his system. Because of that Richardson has been forced to return his medals more than two years after he won them.

Want to know more about the herb you’re smoking? So do we, so we’ve asked Ry Prichard – a fellow Colorado cannabis nerd, grower, photographer and founder of the Cannabis Encyclopedia project which aims to create a central database on cannabis strain information – to help school us all, strain-wise. Each week in our new Cannabis Encyclopedia blog, Prichard will break down a strain from seed to buds. This week? UK Cheese.
