Idaho H.O.P.E. Fest

​The second annual Idaho H.O.P.E. Fest, Boise’s only hemp rally, is coming up on Sunday, September 30 at Ann Morrison Park. The gathering — to educate the public on the many uses of hemp — is designed to promote awareness on the reform of marijuana laws in a positive and polite atmosphere, according to organizers.
H.O.P.E. stands for Hemp Offers People Everything, and this year’s event has a number of goals:
• To collect signatures on Compassionate Idaho’s Citizens Initiative seeking to legalize medical marijuana for Idaho’s seriously ill patients
• To promote the re-legalization of industrial hemp
• To educate the public on the growing cannabis industry, a legitimate market providing jobs and economic growth to states that have legalized its medical use
• To push for public discussions on the reform of Idaho’s archaic and unjust cannabis laws.

Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary entry for “euphoria” is thus:

Stedman’s Medical Dictionary defines euphoria as:
1. A feeling of well-being, commonly exaggerated and not necessarily well founded.
2. The pleasure state induced by a drug or substance of abuse.
The definition I perhaps like the most, comes from the Merriam-Webster’s student dictionary.

I seem to recall a document that was required reading in school with that term in it… it said something like “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. “
Happiness. Euphoria. 
Is it only to be pursued, never achieved?

Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee for President of the United States, has a very clear concept of the mainstream roadblock to marijuana legalization. “We consider marijuana a substance which is dangerous because it is illegal,” she told Toke of the Town in an exclusive interview Friday morning. “But it is, in fact, not dangerous; it is far less a health concern than perfectly legal substances such as tobacco and alcohol.”
When Stein says so, it perhaps carries a little more weight than if your average politician said it; besides being a mother and a housewife, this 1979 Harvard graduate is a medical doctor. And she believes that marijuana prohibition is a really bad idea.
“We think making marijuana illegal increases the public health threat because it forces people to associate with the underground illegal drug culture,” Stein told us. “We are committed to using science in the scheduling of marijuana and hemp, and it’s quite clear that if science is brought to bear on this — it’s supposed to be about health and addiction — marijuana and hemp would not be scheduled substances. We would move quickly to order the DEA to de-schedule marijuana.”

You may remember a couple of months ago I wrote about the despotic behaviour of Peter Reynolds, the leader of the British political party, Cannabis Law Reform, or CLEAR for short.
Things were not looking good for the UK cannabis movement. Attempts by former members of the CLEAR Exec, Chris Bovey and Greg de Hoedt, to topple Reynolds had failed, as Reynolds unconstitutionally sacked them.
Reynolds even filed bogus reports to the British police against those who challenged him, falsely accusing them of hacking the CLEAR web site and boasting on Facebook they were likely to receive a couple of years in prison. Dorset police have since confirmed no action is being taken against the people Reynolds reported with regards to his allegations.

A solid majority of voters nationwide favor legalizing and regulating marijuana similar to the way alcohol and tobacco are currently regulated, according to a poll released last week by Rasmussen Reports. Most of those responding don’t believe it should be a crime for people to smoke marijuana in the privacy of their own homes.

The national telephone survey of 1,000 likely voters shows that 56 percent favor legalizing and regulating marijuana in a manner similar to the way alcohol and cigarettes are regulated. Thirty-six percent (36%) are opposed to legalizing and regulating cannabis in such a manner.
“Polling now consistently shows that more voters support legalizing and regulating marijuana than support continuing a failed prohibition approach,” said Neill Franklin, a retired Baltimore narcotics cop who now works with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). “Yet far too many politicians continue to acts as if marijuana policy reform is some dangerous third rail they dare not touch.

Coalition for a Drug Free California Wants To Punish Assembly Member For Supporting Medical Marijuana Patients

The Coalition for a Drug Free California (CDFC), an extremist anti-marijuana fringe group headed by entertaining wingnut Paul Chabot, has called for California Assembly Member Tom Ammiano to be removed from his chairmanship of the Public Safety Committtee.

You see, Ammiano has dared to voice his support for medical marijuana, and that’s just not permissible in the stuffed-shirt little nightmare world inhabited by Chabot and his minions — and they want to force the rest of us to live in that fucked up little world, too.

Now that the Colorado Senate has passed a DUI marijuana bill with a per se cutoff point of five nanograms per milliliter (5 ng/ml) of blood, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws has issued one of their nationwide action alerts, reports Michael Roberts at Denver Westword.
With the proposal headed to the Colorado House, where it has a good chance of passage, NORML is doing the right thing. This is an execrable piece of legislation. According to the best research available, there is no correlation between 5 ng/ml and driving impairment in most drivers. In fact, experienced cannabis consumers often drive better than their non-toking peers, according to at least one Australian study.
So far, so good: NORML is standing up for the interests of marijuana consumers in Colorado, as they should.

A bill which would legalize the production, distribution and use of marijuana as palliative for the chronically ill appears poised to become law in Connecticut.

The bill passed the Connecticut House on a 96-51 vote, with 79 Democrats joined by 17 Republicans supporting it, and 34 Republicans joined by 17 Democrats in opposing it, reports The Hour.
The Connecticut Senate is expected to approve the bill as well on Friday, and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has said he will sign it if it clears the Senate, as expected.
The debate centered on mercy and compassion, the limits of medicine and concerns about abuse.
Opponents of medical marijuana in Connecticut have distributed a warning letter to state senators from U.S. Attorney David Fein, who wrote that while the Justice Department will not go after seriously ill patients who use marijuana in violation of federal law, it will still enforce federal laws against those who manufacture and distribute cannabis.

The murky world of far-Right politics has never been associated with marijuana legalization.  That is, until recently, in the UK, where a small political party, CLEAR, campaigning for cannabis law reform in Britain, has been marred with controversy by its leader, Peter Reynolds. Reynolds is a self-confessed Tory (that’s like a US Republican) and former member of the UK Freedom Party, a breakaway party from the far right British National Party (BNP).
It all started back in early 2011 when the members of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA), a longstanding pressure group in the UK campaigning to end prohibition of marijuana in Britain, voted to register as an official political party, who then subsequently elected Peter Reynolds as the party leader. Boasting a seemingly impressive C.V., Reynolds came into the UK cannabis scene promising to clean up the image and make great progress with politicians to get a change of law brought about in Britain.
