Tommy Chong is a legend among stoners. The Canadian-American comedian, actor and musician, well known for his stereotypical portrayals of hippie-era pot smokers, turns 73 years old today. He was born May 24, 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Chong is most widely known for his involvement in the Cheech & Chong comedy duo, which recorded a series of albums and then filmed a series of movies centered around marijuana-related humor. He also became well known for playing the hippie character “Leo” on Fox’s That 70s Show.
In 2003, Chong — as a highly visible and successful symbol of the stoner lifestyle — was targeted by two American investigations code-named Operation Pipe Dreams and Operation Headhunter. He was charged for his part in financing and promoting Chong Glass/Nice Dreams, a company started by his son Paris.

weGrow’s third store — and first franchise outside of California — is scheduled to open June 1 in Phoenix, Arizona.

New signage on an old Phoenix warehouse is one of the first visible indicators of the billion-dollar medical marijuana industry’s arrival in the Valley of the Sun.

Marijuana cultivation equipment franchise weGrow, the so-called “Walmart of Weed,” plans to open a 21,000-square-foot superstore in Phoenix on June 1. “WeGrow is the only hydroponics franchise in the nation that openly markets and focuses on the medical marijuana industry,” said media contact Melissa Rzeppa.
“The Green Rush” grand opening event starts with an industry panel and then ends with a public festival. Attendees will be able to visit the onsite medical doctor for evaluations. The latest marijuana-related products and technology will be featured, along with live entertainment.

Just yesterday, while in a Seattle dispensary, I saw the top of a bud jar simply break off when the budtender tried to remove the lid. Such thin glass and flimsy craftsmanship are not a factor when it comes to CannaFresh™ bud jars.

When you pick up a CannaFresh jar, the sheer heft of it becomes obvious, even in the smallest sizes. This is thick glass, and these apothecary-style jars should last for years.
“Our mission is simple,” CannaFresh says. “Keep it Clean. Medical. Professional.” Toward that end, the company offers a number of options, including patient sizes, larger display sizes well-suited for dispensaries, and even CannaFresh Customs™, on which dispensaries can put their logo.

I haven’t had this much fun since Mom brought home a Variety Pack of cereal when I was a kid. Both times, I was packin’ bowls like there’s no tomorrow. (Photo by Steve Elliott)

While visiting friendly Dockside Cooperative in the Seattle suburb of Fremont (“the Center of the Universe”), I noticed one welcome innovation that budtender Aaron told me is very helpful in allowing patients to find the strains that work best for them: sampler packs.
Dockside has sampler packs of both sativa strains and indicas, as well as 50/50 packs with four strains of each. Seen in the photo above is a Sativa Sampler Pack I got at Dockside today.

A new(ish) strain of medical marijuana named after President Barack Obama has hit San Diego dispensaries over the past few months.

The “Obama OG” strain seems to be different than the simple “Obama” pot that one shop was offering in February 2009, reports Dave Maass at San Diego CityBeat. The general consensus on that strain was that it was just a marketing ploy timed to take advantage of the inauguration.
There’s no birth certificate available, but Obama OG seems to actually be one of the latest of the OG Kush strains that have been popular in Southern California, with Skywalker OG being one of the most popular for the past year. The “OG” means it is a descendant of a particular strain of Kush, an indica. The debate still rages among cognoscenti whether “OG” stands for “Ocean Grown” or “Original Gangsta.”
“Call it what you like, Obama OG gives an outstanding and long-lasting therapeutic effect,” reader Paul Smalley of San Diego told Toke of the Town Thursday morning. “I highly recommend it.”
“There’s several schools of thought as to where ‘OG’ came from,’ ” San Diego medical marijuana activist Eugene Davidovich told CityBeat. “And there’s very little standardization or solid information you can find about where it comes from because of the fear a lot of people have of talking about it.”

Holistic Herbal Healers in San Jose, California are now offering more Bhang for the buck

Holistic Herbal Healers, a San Jose, California medical marijuana collective, is now carrying Bhang Chocolate, a gourmet edible that shop says is “carefully tested to ensure a consistent level of medical cannabis in every bar.”

Unlike many cannabis edibles that can vary in strength from batch to batch, all Bhang Chocolates have the same potency, according to HHH, making it easier for patients to regulate their medication.
Bhang Chocolates are available in single-dose, double-dose, and triple-dose four-piece bars. The single-dose bar contains 60 milligrams of THC, which is the chief psychoactive component of marijuana. The double-dose bar contains 120 mg, and the triple-dose bar has 180 mg.
“Medicating yourself with edible cannabis products can be frustrating — as THC levels can vary widely, even in different batches of the same branded product,” said a director at HHH. “The addition of Bhang Chocolates at Holistic Herbal Healers is very good for our patients.”

The new Alta California line of tinctures includes high CBD (Healing), balanced CBD/THC (Tranquility), and high THC (Euphoria).

A California-based company has introduced three cannabis based medicinal extracts (CBMEs), also known as tinctures, derived from organic plant material. They offer patients a choice of low, medium or high euphoric component THC, balanced with the healing cannabinoid CBD.

According to CBD Science LLC, based in San Francisco, “These are the first CBME products on the market with certified potency and purity, scientifically calibrated and documented.”
Steep Hill Lab certifies the propylene glycol (“double alcohol”) CBMEs as Safe Cannabis™, free of pesticides and mold. The lab also documents potency through THC and CBD levels.
The CMBE products, branded Alta California, are so far available to patients with valid recommendations at the following nonprofit dispensaries: Medithrive in San Francisco; Crème De Canna in Santa Cruz; and Magnolia Wellness in Orangevale, California.

The Dirty Heads’ vocalist, Jared Watson (second from left), was interviewed on Monday by Toke of the Town reader Becky Fogarty.

Toke of the Town reader and cannabis activist Becky Fogarty got a chance on Monday to interview vocalist Jared Watson of The Dirty Heads after their tour stop in Pensacola, Florida.

Becky also got to speak with the opening act, unsigned band Tribe Zion of Boulder, Colorado.
By Becky Fogarty
Dirty Heads, one of the “Best New Bands of 2010” according to Rolling Stone magazine, is from Orange County California, was formed in 1996 with vocalist Jared Watson (a.k.a Dirty J) and guitarist/vocalist Dustin Bushnell (a.k.a. Duddy B). Later, percussionist Jon Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa, and bassist David Foral were incorporated into the band.
Dirty Heads music is influenced by Long Beach dub rockers Sublime; however, they have their own unique style with a blend of music genres including hip hop, reggae and rock.
They are currently signed with Executive Music Group and are on the tail end of the 2011 tour, with a few more stops along the way in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
I was able to catch up with Jared Watson for an interview after the show in Pensacola. I was quite impressed with his ability to think fast.
