Arizona’s medical-marijuana dispensaries sold more than 2.5 tons of marijuana in the past 12 months, officials say.
From December 6th, 2012 — opening day for the state’s first state-authorized dispensary, Arizona Organix — to December 9th of this year, 5,279 pounds of marijuana were sold, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. The health department provided the numbers this morning following a Phoenix New Times records request made last month. Click over to the New Times for the rest of the story.

An Israeli medical marijuana worker carries freshly harvested cannabis flowers

Israel is a world leader in medical marijuana use, according to anesthesiologist and pain relief expert Dr. Bareket Schiff-Keren, who said as much in his testimony to the Knesset Committee on Drug Abuse on Tuesday. But there’s a problem with the system: about 15 tons of medicinal cannabis are stolen each year, according to police records.

Israel Police representative Eyal Zilberman told the committee that medical marijuana is being sold on the black market, and the fields to grow cannabis are not properly secured to prevent theft, reports Lahav Harkov at The Jerusalem Post.

Could Colombia be making a play to return to its days of glory, back in the late 1970s, when it was likely the number one supplier of marijuana in the world? One could easily assume as much based upon the multi-ton busts happening there recently.

Colombian police seized almost 10,000 pounds — nearly five tons — of marijuana over the span of three drays in Medellin and Pereira, authorities said on Monday, reports Sara Gates at The Huffington Post.
According to Colombia Reports, in the main bust, Medellin police arrested four men who tried to smuggle 5,000 pounds of weed in a truck carrying oranges. The payload, consisting of “more than 101 bales of marijuana,” weighed about 5,597 pounds.

More Arizonans than ever hold medical-marijuana cards, boosting state-legal cannabis sales — and the tax revenue from them — to a new record.

Arizona patients bought 29 tons of cannabis products in 2016, according to records published today by the state Department of Health Services.

Included in the total are about 27 tons of buds and another couple of tons of edibles and concentrates like wax, shatter, and hash oil.

That’s a 53 percent increase over last year’s 19 tons of cannabis products sold.

Rick Scott can’t stop thinking about pee.

A federal judge told him to drop the plan. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals told him it was illegal. Then the U.S. Supreme Court refused to listen to his arguments. Even the facts are against him (the program wastes more money than it would ever “save”).
But despite losing over and over in every court around, Gov. Rick Scott is still fighting for the right to force state employees to pee in a cup. And the legal bills for his quixotic quest are now inching toward a cool million bucks — funded, of course, by taxpayers.

The demand for cannabis in Colorado this year has been stronger than anticipated, according to a recent state study on the industry.
A report filed by the state’s Marijuana Policy Group predicts that the demand for pot by adults 21 and over to reach around 121.4 metric tons this year. That’s 31 percent higher than previously estimated by the Colorado Department of Revenue.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court to resolve the issue of medical-marijuana extracts for a seizure-plagued boy.
Saying an oil from a low-THC strain of marijuana has dramatically reduced the seizures suffered by 5-year-old Zander Welton, the ACLU and the Weltons are asking the court to declare that extracts are legal under the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act and block County Attorney Bill Montgomery from taking legal action against the family based on his “incorrect” interpretation of the law. Back in July of this year, TokeOfTheTown.com editor, William Breathes, reported on headlines coming out of the Middle Eastern nation of Turkey, where government officials had just confiscated roughly three tons of hash during a drug sting on an illegal weed growing operation. Being a visual learner myself, the imagery he provided of “6 right whale testicles” painted just the comparative masterpiece that I needed in order to comprehend the magnitude of the 3-ton hash bust in Turkey.
Reports from Turkey this week are that they have broken their all-time record for drugs seized in a single operation, when anti-smuggling and organized crime agents from the Diyarbakir Police Department uncovered over 23 tons of weed – a stash roughly the size of a full grown killer whale, testicles and all.

To get three tons of hash, multiply this by about 2.7 million.

Turkish police this week seized more than 15 million marijuana plants over 1,000 acres. And while that’s a staggering number of plants to uproot, the more impressive part of the haul was the three tons of hash police found sitting in a field.
That’s about the same weight as three 1967 VW bugs, a large white rhinoceros, or six right whale testicles.
