It’s the sort of story that inspires locals to use the phrase “Only in Boulder:” Tyler Mason has been fired as a deputy and is facing multiple charges for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana edibles and chewing tobacco into Boulder County Jail, where he worked.

On September 23, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office release, an inmate at the facility told another staffer that a fellow jailee had arranged with a deputy to obtain the edibles and chaw.

A story recently published about drug smuggling being on the rise at many California jails contains this interesting fact about Orange County’s lockup: Not only has there been a massive increase in illegal drugs making it inside, but the county is purchasing several full-body scanners to give deputies full views of inmates’ internal organs and any contraband they might be hiding.

Roger Christie in a recent interview with KITV.

When Westword last spoke to Colorado-born, Hawaii-based THC Ministry founder Roger Christie in June 2010, he was readying a challenge to the federal government’s marijuana laws that would have treated dispensaries like churches. But mere weeks later, he was busted by the feds on pot distribution charges and spent the next four years-plus in jail.
Now, Christie is out and readying a new push to bring Colorado-style marijuana laws to Hawaii. Read more at The Latest Word.

Kenneth Kukec.

A lot of addicts say they needed to hit rock bottom before being ready to accept recovery. This apparently has not yet happened for Miami lawyer Kenneth Kukec. He was arrested in July after he was allegedly caught snorting lines of cocaine off the back of a toilet in a Circle K in the Florida Keys, but was back in jail on Monday after violating his pretrial release by testing positive for amphetamines.

A former City of Ferguson corrections officer has been charged with the rape of a jail inmate. The incident occurred back on October 9, 2013, but the charges against Jaris Hayden — for felony sexual contact with an inmate and permitting an escape — were just filed on November 5 of this year.
The indictment came just a week and a half before the victim, identified only as J.W., filed a suit in federal court against the City of Ferguson as well as Hayden. She was in custody for driving with expired plates and giving a police officer a fake name. Riverfront Times has more.

The Long, Strange Saga of Kent Easter has ended. Sunbeams breaking through clouds, birds singing again and our collective sigh of relief being accompanied by a pleasing endorphin rush can mean only one thing, Orange County: Kent Wycliffe Easter is officially jail-bound.
The Hon. Judge Thomas Goethals made it official this morning, sentencing the Irvine dad to six months in jail–minus 76 days already served–for joining his fellow attorney wife in trying to frame an elementary school volunteer for drug possession because they thought she’d insulted their then-6-year-old son. She hadn’t.

Get caught with a joint in Dallas this afternoon and you’ll find yourself being chauffeured to Lew Sterrett in the back of a squad car. Get caught with a joint in Dallas this January and you may well escape with a ticket and a stern admonition to show up in court. The Dallas Morning News reported over the weekend that Dallas County will pilot a cite-and-release program next year allowing those caught with less than two ounces of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, to avoid a trip to jail.
Before you hail Dallas County as a paragon of criminal justice reform, however, keep in mind a handful of caveats.

“Instead of putting this guy in jail, somebody should be studying him,” Dr. Charles Goldman, cancer surgeon at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines

Unless you are one of the very few who qualify for Iowa’s recently passed, and highly restrictive, medical marijuana program, the law is clear in the Hawkeye State when it comes to possessing and growing cannabis.

A first offense of possessing any amount of weed in Iowa can earn you a fat $1000 fine and up to six months in the clink. If they catch you growing pot in Iowa, you’ll be looking at a much steeper fine and anywhere from five, to twenty five, years in prison.
So it was kind of a big deal when 48-year old Benton Mackenzie left the courtroom with just probation yesterday, after being found guilty of cultivating 71 cannabis plants after a police raid on their property back in June of last year. Under the circumstances, however, it’s easy to see why the Judge showed some leniency.
