Often times, newer growers tend to believe that if you put up some lights and feed your plants good nutrients, you will get big yields. While these are factors in plant growth, the reality is that maximizing yields is about fostering photosynthesis and plant metabolism. That means maintaining temperatures, humidity, and adequate carbon dioxide levels. It is a delicate dance between balancing environmental factors, providing rich nutrients and listening to your plants that will ultimately lead to a bountiful harvest. Staying on top of CO2 levels while growing cannabis indoors, when combined with the right cultivation technique, can deliver you truly enviable yields.

Understanding the Basics of Photosynthesis

Anyone can throw together a rudimentary cannabis grow room, however, to get the most out of your garden, you have to understand the basic processes that lead to happy and healthy plants. Photosynthesis is the process by which all plants take in carbon dioxide, sunlight and water and convert them into energy. It is this energy that turns all of your hard work into the dense buds that you will come to harvest later. Increasing yields are all about maximizing the energy that your plant metabolizes from the nutrients you feed, and the environment that you create.

The Benefits of Increasing CO2

Optimal conditions for a cannabis grow are between 75 and 85 degrees, depending on strain, stage and a handful of other factors. Humidity levels should remain around 40-50% during flowering. There is an intimate relationship between temperature and humidity, however, the one thing that often gets left out of this equation is CO2. Carbon dioxide has a direct impact on the rate of metabolism in your cannabis plants. As temperatures rise, in order to keep up with the demand for increased metabolism, there has to be an injection of CO2. Increased CO2 facilitates the process of photosynthesis, and as a result can not only affect plant size, but the quality of cannabinoids contained within.

The Luxury of Indoor Cultivation

Indoors you have the luxury of being able to boost CO2 levels at will. This is one benefit to indoor cultivation. Increased CO2 levels, besides facilitating metabolic process, also aid the plant in fighting adverse environmental conditions. In a manner of speaking, CO2 helps to immunize the plant from things like air and soil contaminants, adverse reactions to physical damage, shifting temperature shock and a host of other potential problems. Carbon dioxide levels will often be the determining factor as to whether or not a plant pulls through in rough conditions.

Finding a Balance

Outdoors, the carbon dioxide levels are about 400 ppm, or parts per million. Plants themselves can handle a much higher concentration. To achieve optimal growth, indoor cannabis grow rooms should maintain a CO2 ppm of around 1200-1500. This means having sufficient light to bring temperatures up enough to balance the increased CO2. Finding the right balance between temperature, humidity and CO2 levels is the key to maximizing your plants’ metabolic processes and achieving the yields of which you once only dreamed.

The house on Allencrest Lane — a tidy four-bedroom, three-bath ranch-style in North Dallas — isn’t the first place one would look for a weed-growing mastermind named Bone.
Nevertheless, that’s where DEA agents tracked down 37-year-old Brian Edward Deloney in June 2010, not to mention several gallon-sized bags of hydroponic weed, nearly a dozen live marijuana plants under fluorescent lights, and a Tupperware container full of cash. Our friends at the Dallas Observer have the full story.

A security guard who worked at one of the largest music conglomerates in the world is suing his former employer numerous labor code violations stemming from what she says was wonton marijuana use and drug abuse in Santa Monica building where she worked.
The woman – who remains nameless – charges that Universal Music Group in California blatantly allowed musicians and guests to smoke marijuana in the courtyard, in the stairwells, in the alleyway behind the building, in the studios, and even in the lobby.

Results from a new study show indicate that bipolar patients with a history of marijuana use have better neurocognitive function than those who have never used cannabis.

The team, from The Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, found that patients with bipolar I (BD I) disorder who used marijuana performed better on tests of attention, processing speed, and working memory than other BD 1 patients, reports Mark Cowen at News Medical.

“These data could be interpreted to suggest that cannabis use may have a beneficial effect on cognitive functioning in patients with severe psychiatric disorders,” said lead researcher Raphael Braga.

Could your medical marijuana dispensary be reporting you to the Feds? Some California collective operators are working as confidential federal informants, according to chilling new information revealed as a result of an ongoing investigation into municipal corruption.

Last week, federal authorities arrested three current and former city officials in Cudahy — the mayor, a city councilman, and a former acting city manager — on bribery charges for allegedly taking $17,000 in bribes from someone who wanted to open a dispensary in the town, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Akrotirianakis, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Could orange jumpsuits be “in” this season?

Richard Hilfiger, the 20-year-old son of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, was arrested last weekend in Hollywood for alleged possession of marijuana with intent to sell, reports Josh Grossberg at E! Online.
The wannabe rapper, who goes by the hiphop name “Rich Hil” and has cut tracks with Kid Cudi and Swizz Beatz, was pulled over on Sunset Boulevard by patrolling sheriff’s deputies in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Sgt. Shawn Ruda.
Officers found what they claimed was a “huge stash of marijuana” in his car (no amount mentioned), which is apparently why they chose to charge young Hilfiger with a felony intent-to-distribute charge instead of simple possession.

Comely Deputy Danielle Malone saw a bulge in the suspect’s pants. Bet that happens pretty often! Here, she holds two large compressed bricks of marijuana seized after a traffic stop. The bricks together weigh an estimated “6 to 8 pounds.”

”Is that your billfold, or are you just glad to see me?” Two Florida men pulled over early Sunday morning on Cudjoe Key tried to pass off a big brick of marijuana as a wallet, according to police.

Deputy Danielle Malone claimed she saw a white Crown Victoria speeding and swerving around 3 a.m., according to Brian Hamacher of NBC Miami. When she pulled the vehicle over and approached the driver’s side, Deputy Malone claimed she saw a large black garbage bag on the passenger’s side of the floorboard.
By the time she got around to the passenger’s side to check it out, she said the bag was gone, but the passenger “suddenly had a large bulge in his pants leg.” I’ll go out on a limb here, and make a guess that sort of thing happens to the deputy on a regular basis.
