Georgia governor to legalize limited use of CBD under trial program after state legislature drops the ball

Families of children suffering from severe seizures could have access to high-CBD treatments under a plan expected later today from Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal.

Deal says his office worked out a proposal after the state legislature dropped the ball on passing an (extremely limited) CBD-only medical marijuana proposal this session. The legislative would have allowed for parents to access high-CBD oil, but didn’t allow them to grow it. In fact, nobody in Georgia could have grown it under the proposal. Instead, would-be patients would have to travel out of state to access any treatment whatsoever.
No word on how limited Deal’s deal will be though the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the bill will likely task a local college to create a clinical trial program whereby patients who get access to the meds would be studied. Deal says that he has been in talks with the feds about how to get CBD oil to his state without breaking federal drug transportation laws.
“This approach would be similar to having a clinical-type trial,” Deal told the paper earlier this week. “They could validate, document and keep the records so we know whether what we’ve tried is actually working or not.”
The governor has called a press conference for later this afternoon.
