N.H. House Overwhelmingly Passes Marijuana Decriminalization

The New Hampshire House of Representatives Wednesday voted, as it did in 2008, to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.

House Bill 1653, which would reduce the penalty for possessing one-quarter ounce or less of cannabis, passed by an overwhelming 214-137 vote. That’s almost 61 percent of the House voting in favor of decrim.

Previously, the bill had been recommended “out to pass” in a 16-2 vote by the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee on February 11.

“This makes three years in a row that the House has passed a bill attempting to reform New Hampshire’s archaic marijuana policies,” said Matt Simon, executive director for the New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy.

Argentine Grandma Faces Trial For Two Pot Plants

A federal appeals court in Argentina has ruled that a grandmother has to stand trial for growing two marijuana plants in her back yard.

Argentina’s Supreme Court ruled in August 2009 that it is unconstitutional to punish adults for privately using marijuana, as long as the use doesn’t hurt anyone else. For that reason, a federal judge had previously issued a stay against prosecuting the woman, who swore she used the cannabis solely for herself, reports CNN.

But the public prosecutor’s office appealed the ruling, and a federal appeals court overturned the previous decision because the woman lives with her two sons and a grandchild.

The three-page appeals court ruling said the grandmother could not prove the marijuana was solely for her personal consumption.

Last year’s unanimous Supreme Court ruling made Argentina the second Latin American nation within a one-week span to allow personal use of a formerly illegal drug.

Mitch Hedberg (February 24, 1968 – March 29, 2005) was an American stand-up comedian known for his surreal humor and unconventional comedic delivery.

His routines featured elocutive but often short, sometimes one-line, observational comedy, mixed with absurd and paraprosdokian elements as well as non sequiturs.

Hedberg’s unique comedy and gentle on-stage persona gained him a cult following.

The man who opened the very first “pot club” in the United States for medical marijuana users is coming to Ashland, Oregon Tuesday night to speak in favor of legalizing cannabis.

Dennis Peron, known as the “father of medical marijuana,” is lending his support to full legalization in Oregon, reports John Darling of the Southern Oregon Mail Tribune.

Peron, 64, of San Francisco, was co-author and a major backer of California’s successful 1996 medical marijuana ballot measure, the first in the United States.

Peron is famed for his statement, “All use of marijuana is medical use.”

The passage of medical marijuana laws changed the image of cannabis from something used by “long-hair, hippie crazy” people to a drug of middle class people, Peron said.

“It helped make [marijuana use]more benevolent,” he said. “We turned the tide.”

Peron said the thrust of his work now is ballot measures to normalize marijuana distribution, so “you can get it at Walgreen’s” at affordable prices.

Maryland: Dems, Repubs Both Push For Medical Marijuana

A bill to legalize medical marijuana in Maryland, with state-run production centers, is getting support from legislators in both parties.

“This bill will provide Maryland’s doctors and patients with another tool in the toolbox, to be used safely and responsibly like any other therapy,” said Delegate Dan Morhaim (D-Baltimore County), who is the bill’s co-sponsor and a medical doctor.

Marijuana dispensaries would be licensed by the state under the plan. The cultivation and distribution of cannabis would be monitored by Maryland’s agriculture department and health department.

Dude Arrested For Trying To Break Into Jail

It’s easier to get in than to get out… usually.

A man climbed over a fence and tried to break into an Oregon jail after drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, according to police.

Medford, Oregon Police Lt. Bob Hansen said that about 4:10 a.m. Monday, jail officials saw a man scaling the fence around an area where officers unload incoming prisoners and take them inside, reports Anita Burke at the Southern Oregon Mail Tribune.

The jail officials confronted the man on the grounds and called police, who cited the intruder, James Merrill DeVore, for disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Ailing Dennis Hopper Seen Shopping At Marijuana Dispensary

Legendary actor Dennis Hopper, the Easy Rider himself, was photographed Thursday at The Farmacy Cannabis Club in Venice, California, a medical marijuana dispensary.

Hopper wore a checkered paperboy cap and dark-rimmed glasses into the establishment, which resembles a farmer’s market, according to “Doug” at RadarOnline.

Hopper’s filmography contains many high points in addition to the 1969 counterculture classic Easy Rider, which featured an iconic pot-smoking scene with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.

In 2004, he rushed for more than a thousand yards as running back with the Denver Broncos. Now he could be going to jail for growing marijuana.

Reuben Droughns is “under investigation” by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration for growing pot in his Centennial, Colorado home, reports Julie Hayden of KDVR Denver.

According to KDVR, Droughns is raising the medical marijuana defense, but the DEA, which under federal law doesn’t recognize the medical use of pot, is having none of it.

Agents reportedly found an indoor marijuana grow operation in the spare bedrooms of the former NFL star’s home.

Droughns reportedly didn’t show investigators a medical marijuana card, but his mother and brother did.

San Diego Marijuana Dispensary May Be Headed For Reality TV

Mother Earth’s Alternative Healing Cooperative, a medical marijuana dispensary in the San Diego suburb of Fallbrook, may be featured in an upcoming reality TV series about California’s cannabis culture.

Two Los Angeles television producers were in town Wednesday to film interviews at the dispensary for a pilot episode they plan to pitch to Showtime, Bravo, Lifetime and other networks, reports Morgan Cook of the North County Times.

The show, which may be titled “Grass Roots,” will explore California’s burgeoning pot culture, from growers in Northern California to the dispensaries which sell marijuana to patients statewide.
