Seattle Police won’t be ticketing people for public consumption at this weekend’s Hempfest. Instead, they’ll be issuing munchies along with information on the newly-passed marijuana laws in Washington state.
We already predict that there will be two schools of thought on this from the ganja smoking camp: The first, is that it’s a funny, smart and tongue-in-check way of distributing some public information to a target group of people. The second is that it’s an insulting way for police to continue stereotype cannabis users as junk-food eating dumbbells. We here at Toke side more with the former than the latter here, though admittedly we have a thing for Doritos to begin with.

Update – 2:55 p.m. 7/25/2013: According to the Associated Press, four dispensaries were targeted in raids yesterday, despite claims by one Washington attorney that as many as 18 were on the chopping block.
So far, Seattle Cross, Tacoma Cross, Key Peninsula Cross and Bayside Collective (formerly Lacey Cross) are the four dispensaries identified. All four were also parts of raids in 2011. The feds haven’t officially commented on it, but employees at Bayside Collective say agents told them that the raids were part of a two-year investigation.

BB Ranch.

No, its not going to make you stoned. It’s could make you fat, though. A butcher in Seattle has begun serving pork from pot-fed pigs, and says the taste is hog-heaven.
Cassandra Sawywer with the Seattle Met uncovered the tip the other week in talking with the head butcher of BB Ranch butcher shop at the Pike Place Market in Washington. He dubbed them “pot pigs”, and came up with the idea with Bucking Boar Farms owner who already serves pigs used vodka grains from a nearby distillery.

Eleven Seattle-area medical marijuana shops were told to shut down by the Drug Enforcement Administration for being within 1,000 feet of schools. The letters take a similar tactic to one federal agents used in 2011 and 2012 in Washington and other states.
“The DEA enforces federal drug laws and these letters have nothing to do with any pending legislation or state law,” a DEA spokeswoman told the Seattle Times .

Cannabis users across the state of Washington sparked up to celebrate the passage of Initiative 502 last year, which legalized the personal use and possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for anyone over the age of 21. I-502 still prohibits the consumption of marijuana in public places, and driving under the influence of marijuana, but along with the state of Colorado, Washington seems poised to blaze a new trail for marijuana legalization.

Sure smells good up in this squad car, officer.

The Seattle Police Department on Tuesday announced that due to the recent legalization of marijuana in Washington state, job applicants will no longer be disqualified for using cannabis in the last three years — now it’s just a one-year period in which you are required not to have gotten high.

This is a big change; it makes the SPD the first police department in Washington to modify its hiring process due to marijuana legalization, reports Matt Driscoll at the Seattle Weekly.

Washington state’s I-502 may not be the best piece of “legalization” legislation you’ve ever seen; it certainly has its share of warts, including the unscientific DUI blood limits for active THC, and the continued prohibition on home cultivation. But there are definite up-sides to the passage of 502.

Among those delicious up-sides is the publication — by the Seattle Police Department — of a guide on how to legally use marijuana in the Emerald City.
A cop-penned guide on how to legally use marijuana? That shit just couldn’t have happened until November 6, man. Let’s enjoy the thing, in its entirety.
(The cops got a little clever, entitling their magnum dopus “Marijwhatnow? A Guide To Legal Marijuana Use In Seattle.”)

Hempfest Central

After 21 years of grassroots activism centered around the world-famous Seattle Hempfest — the largest pot “protestival” on the planet — the Hempfest organization is branching out with a world headquarters and storefront in THC-attle.

The shop will feature an array of eco-friendly hemp products and specialty items for the 420 culture.

Hempfest Central’s grand opening will be November 16 through 18, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., at 12351 Lake City Way NE, #102, (Corner of Lake City Way and 31st Ave. NE), Seattle.

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration sent three more letters to Seattle-area medical marijuana dispensaries last week, agency spokesperson Jodie Underwood has confirmed. The letters “strongly advised” the dispensaries to pay “prompt attention” that they are in violation of federal law, and directed them to close down with 30 days.

That brings the total to 29 Washington dispensaries which have received threatening letters so far from the feds, reports Nina Shapiro at Seattle Weekly. This includes 23 facilities which got letters sent on August 18, three more sent out on August 30, and three last week, according to Dr. Decrim of WA CANN, the Washington Cannabis Alert and News Network.
