Neutron Media to NORML: “If CBS changes their morals we will let you know.” (See the rejected ad below.)

CBS and Neutron Media Screen Marketing have rejected a paid marijuana legalization advertisement from NORML that was intended to appear on the CBS Super Screen billboard in New York City’s Time Square.
The 15-second ad, which asserts that taxing and regulating the adult use and sale of marijuana would raise billions of dollars in national revenue, was scheduled to appear on CBS’s 42nd Street digital billboard beginning February 1.
According to NORML, representatives from Neutron Media approached the pro-pot organization in mid-January about placing the ad, which was scheduled to air 18 times per day for a two-month period. The NORML Foundation entered into a contractual agreement with Neutron Media to air two separate NORML advertisements, and produced an initial ad exclusively for broadcast on the CBS digital billboard.

Legalization is gaining momentum in the Pacific Northwest — and the promise of big tax money is proving hard to resist for some legislators.

Thanks to Toke of the Town‘s good friend Michael Bachara of Hemp News for alerting us to a KATU-TV news report on the legalization movement in Oregon and Washington (see video below).

Although reporter Anna Song somehow completely misses covering the Sensible Washington voter initiative signature drive, she does interview the very cool Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson (D-Seattle) of the Washington Legislature.
“We are treating marijuana like we treated alcohol during Prohibition,” Dickerson says, “and it doesn’t make sense.”

Nice speeches… But same old Drug War.

Contrary to campaign promises and past policy statements, the Obama Administration is expanding the War on (Some) Drugs and focusing funds toward law enforcement over treatment.

Opinion? No, fact. According to 2011 funding “highlights” released this week by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the administration budgets $15.5 billion for Drug War spending in 2011, an increase of 3.5 percent over 2010.
Even more ominously, the 2011 budget represents an increase of 5.2 percent in overall enforcement funding ($9.9 billion in 2011 vs. $9.7 billion in 2010).
For the non-policy-wonks among you who aren’t into numbers, this is roughly the equivalent of throwing 15 and a half billion dollars up a wild hog’s ass and hollering “soooEEEEEE!”

Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department
David Johnson was arrested after sheriff’s investigators watched him smoking marijuana with his sons on YouTube.

A 44-year-old Nebraska man was arrested after sheriff’s investigators watched about 90 “how to smoke marijuana” videos on YouTube that also feature his sons.

The videos, filmed over a 16-month period that ended about two months ago — show David K. Johnson, 44, rolling joints and smoking marijuana from pipes and bongs with his two sons, 20 and 17.

Lt. Steve Grabowski of the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department said an anonymous tip started their investigation of Johnson, formerly of Gretna, Neb.
A search warrant was issued Jan. 12 for Johnson’s then-home in Gretna. He has since moved out, reports Leia Mendoza of the Omaha World-Herald.

A new television advertisement criticizing a Nevada district attorney’s anti-marijuana position will air for the first time on Wednesday, according to Nevadans for Sensible Marijuana Laws.

The ad, which asks Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick why he opposes ending Nevada’s prohibition of marijuana, will air Wednesday, January 27, on KRNV-TV in Reno, Nevada.
“The ad we are unveiling Tuesday addresses a serious subject — public safety,” said Dave Schwartz, campaign manager for Nevadans for Sensible Marijuana Laws.
“It does so by contrasting the fact that 25 to 30 percent of all violent crimes in the U.S. are alcohol related with District Attorney Gammick’s desire to focus law enforcement resources on adults who use marijuana, which is less harmful than alcohol and less likely to lead to acts of violence,” Schwartz said.

I didn’t catch the question, ladies, but the answer is probably yes.

Folks, it’s hard not to love America at a time like this.
Life may not always be a perfect party, but there are definitely some compensations.
Among those are these two appealingly stoned young ladies, who somehow seem almost sweetly shy.

SAFER Campuses Initiative

With the spring semester beginning at colleges around the nation, the SAFER Campuses Initiative, letting students know marijuana is safer than alcohol, is off to an early start, according to Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER).

Every objective study on marijuana, according to SAFER, has concluded that marijuana is far safer than alcohol. Yet most of the nation’s universities punish students far more harshly for pot than for booze.
“In doing so, they are sending a dangerous message that fosters and perpetuates a ‘culture of alcohol’ on campuses nationwide, and drives students to drink rather than make the rational, safer choice to use marijuana instead,” SAFER says in a press release.

Toke of the Town realizes that many of you are going to get blotto on New Year’s Eve, and there’s no denying that’s the traditional thing to do.
But as Mason Tvert has told us, marijuana is safer. So if you want to have the best time possible this December 31 as you bring in a fresh 2010, maybe you should have a pot party instead of a beer bash.
At the very least, if you must get drunk, smoke pot while doing so. Scientific studies show that marijuana helps protect your brain cells from the damaging effects of bingeing on alcohol.
Towards the goal of reducing the incidence of nasty hangovers, projectile puking, and waking up in bed with people you don’t know, and in the interest of promoting parties that are safer and more fun, here are 10 songs you don’t want to miss when compiling a playlist to bring in the new year in high style.

This is what the cops described as a “sophisticated marijuana factory.” Guess they don’t get out much.

A former voice for a drug-free workplace pleaded guilty Friday to “trafficking medical grade marijuana,” reports Curtis Johnson at the Huntington Herald-Dispatch.

Wendall Searls, 56, admitted in court Friday that he grew “medical grade” marijuana for himself, family and friends.
Huntington, W.Va., police called the grow operation a “marijuana factory” when they raided the house in September. They said they found more than 100 cannabis plants in a sophisticated indoor facility. Police said they believed Searls owned the grow house, but lived with his fiancée in Putnam County.

After 72 years of the debate being controlled by those who’ve made it taboo to even talk honestly on the subject, it’s time to tell the truth about marijuana.
The deck remains stacked, of course, in favor of cannabis prohibition. The reason? Folks who know that marijuana should be legal are often too intimidated to say so — because, until now, speaking cannabis truth has sometimes carried a heavy price.
For years, a few brave medical doctors such as Lester Grinspoon of Harvard have been voices in the wilderness of marijuana prohibition. Their repeated calls for an open and honest debate on the subject have largely fallen on deaf ears.
Until now, when it comes to marijuana, those who know won’t say, and those who say don’t know.
