Vermont joins 16 other states today that have decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Gov. Peter Shumlin signed H.200 yesterday afternoon, making possession of up to an ounce of marijuana and five grams of hash a civil penalty on part with a traffic ticket for those 21 and up. The maximum fine would be set at $200 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense and $500 for third and subsequent offenses.
When it comes to performance-enhancing drugs, the World Anti-Doping Agency has a hard line: keep it clean.
And like a growing surge of people across the world, they understand that marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug and that a few recreational (or medical) puffs of ganja when not in competition aren’t going to harm anyone.
The Illinois senate Friday approved House Bill 1, which would create a state-regulated medical marijuana patient program as well as authorize state-regulated medical marijuana dispensaries. Lawmakers say they have created one of the strictest programs in the nation.
But Governor Pat Quinn says he’s still considering the bill, though he told reporters earlier today that he remains “open minded” on the issue. Lt. Gov. Shelia Simon has publicly expressed her support for the bill.

Serious marijuana discussion is taking place in our nation’s capitol, if only at the municipal level.
According to the Washington Post, D.C. city council members are trying to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana and have a few proposals in the works to do just that.
If the state allows people to use medical marijuana, they should also allow those patients to drive so long as they aren’t impaired. That’s the gist of a law currently making its way through the Nevada legislature that would exempt medical marijuana patients from laws prohibiting drivers from having any marijuana – active or inactive – in their systems.
You know the scales are tipping in favor of reasonable cannabis laws when Fox News polls agree with cannabis supporters.
That’s the case this week with a survey showing 85 percent of Americans would approve of people legally using medical marijuana with a physicians recommendation.

The daughter of anti-marijuana Republican U.S. House speaker John Boehner is marrying a ganja-toking Rastafarian from Jamaica.
According to the Jamaica Gleaner, Lindsay Boehner is engaged to Jamaican national Dominic Lakhan, who lives and works in Florida as a construction worker. Linsay Boehner and the dreadlocked Lakhan – who both reside in Florida – are set to marry this weekend, according to the New York Daily news.

The Obama administration is taking a shift (albeit not a very drastic one) towards treating drug problems as a health issue and not as a criminal issue. On Wednesday the White House released their 2013 National drug Control Strategy, a 104-page document that outlines how treatment should become a focus for the nation’s drug control policy.
But at the same time, it doesn’t really tell the police and DEA to stop arresting anybody either and continues a prohibition and war against marijuana (both recreational and medical).

With April 20th, or 4/20, falling on a Saturday this year, the annual pot smokers’ holiday saw events, festivals, and concerts crop up in cities and states across the country in celebration of all things cannabis.

Just ask longtime UFC referee, Josh Rosenthal, who agreed to a plea deal with the U.S District Attorney’s office in January of this year, after federal agents discovered 1,356 marijuana plants growing in a warehouse owned by he and an associate.
Facing charges of growing an estimated six million dollars’ worth of illegal weed, Rosenthal’s next scheduled court appearance is at the U.S. District Court, on May 17th to face sentencing. He had originally pleaded not guilty to the charges in October 2012, but struck his plea deal earlier this year, admitting his guilt. Rosenthal was facing 10 years in federal prison and a ten million dollar fine, but now he is expected to see that sentence reduced to around 3 years of jail time, stiff fines, and a 5 year probation that will subject him to random searches.
