GOP Senate candidate Dino Rossi captured in a rare moment without his head up his ass

You’d expect a politician to promote medical research being done at local universities. But Republican Senatorial candidate Dino Rossi of Washington on Thursday tried to gain some traction in his political campaign by attacking a local research project which studies the use of marijuana cannabinoids to control pain.

Rossi thought it would make an easy target, after all: Talk about “wasteful” federal stimulus spending to rile up the Tea Party faithful, and then drag in a tired old stoner stereotype for good measure.

“This is one of those boondoggle projects that forces you to set aside the serious economic consequences of this so-called stimulus for a moment and just laugh at how out of touch Washington, D.C., really is,” Rossi said. “Washington state taxpayers are tired of their money going up in smoke. This bill isn’t going to stimulate anything other than sales of Cheetos.”

It’s time for a diversion, Rossi seems to believe, to distract voters from inconvenient little things like, well, the fact that he was recently named to a list of the 11 Most Crooked Candidates in the United States(!) by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

Did Kentucky Senate hopeful Rand Paul tie a college girl up and try to force her to take bong hits?

A new article profiling Kentucky Republican Senate hopeful Rand Paul’s college days makes the allegation that Paul and a friend once kidnapped a classmate and tried to force her to smoke marijuana.

The GQ Magazine article by Jason Zengerle relates the anecdote about Tea Party darling Paul and another alleged member of the “NoZe Brotherhood,” a “secret society” described as “a refuge for atypical Baylor students,” reports Stephanie Condon at CBS News.

The unnamed woman, reportedly a college classmate of Paul’s, requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, according to GQ. She told Zengerle about the incident, which allegedly occurred in 1983:

“He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They’d been smoking pot.” After the woman refused to smoke with them, Paul and his friend put her back in their car and drove to the countryside outside of Waco, where they stopped near a creek. “They told me their god was ‘Aqua Buddha’ and that I needed to bow down and worship him,” the woman recalls. “They blindfolded me and made me bow down to ‘Aqua Buddha’ in the creek. I had to say, ‘I worship you Aqua Buddha, I worship you.’

Narcs Claim Sound Is Dangerous ‘Gateway Drug’ For Kids

In one of the latest examples of moronic Drug War hyperbole, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is warning parents about a dangerous new “drug” — binaural sound.

Seems these Okie drug warriors are convinced that seemingly harmless MP3 downloads are just the latest way crazy teenagers are using to get high. They call listening to the files “i-dosing,” and claim that evil “digital dealers” are selling kids the aural equivalent of crack cocaine, reports Jason Mick at DailyTech.

“Kids are going to flock to these sites just to see what it is about and it can lead them to other places,” warned Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward.

Woodward claims the “digital drugs” are leading formerly innocent children down a primrose path of self destruction and harder drugs.

CA Sen. Feinstein Opposes Marijuana Legalization

Dianne Feinstein must be tired of being a senator. She does some really dumb stuff sometimes — like opposing pot legalization.

California’s senior senator, Dianne Feinstein, has lent her voice and support to the effort to defeat Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization measure on the state’s November ballot, reports John Hoeffel at the Los Angeles Times.

Feinstein, a prominent Democrat who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, has signed the ballot argument against Prop 19. On Monday, she made a statement through the opposition campaign calling the measure “a jumbled legal nightmare that will make our highways, our workplaces and our communities less safe.”

Spineless Los Angeles County Supervisors are about to cut off safe access for 1.5 million people.

A million and a half people are about to lose safe access to marijuana.

Worried that Los Angeles’s new crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries is pushing the pot shops out into other communities, pot-phobic Los Angeles County supervisors took steps Tuesday to ban dispensaries from unincorporated areas countywide.

“It leaves the unincorporated portion vulnerable,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, author of the motion. The board, according to Antonovich, should protect residents’ “safety and property values.”

Bonehead move, Moonbeam. Gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown on Tuesday said he does not support legalizing marijuana in California.

Brown’s ill-advised announcement comes as the Golden State prepares to vote on the marijuana issue on November’s ballot, the same ballot voters will use to decide if he will be the next Governor of California, reports The State Column.

Moonbeam didn’t even have a coherent argument against cannabis legalization. In an appalling lapse of logic, the Democratic ex-governor said legalizing pot would open the floodgates for Mexican drug cartels — sort of like arguing that alcohol Prohibition should have been continued to quell the gang violence associated with the illegal booze trade.

“Every year we get more and more marijuana, and every year we find more guys with AK-47s coming out of Mexico going into forests and growing more and more dangerous and losing control,” a confused Brown said.

Marijuana policy reformer Steve Fox quickly pointed out “the idiocy of decrying the involvement of drug cartels in the marijuana trade while opposing a regulated system of distribution.”

WA: Democrats Endorse Pot Legalization At State Convention

Delegates to the Washington State Democratic Convention endorsed I-1068, the marijuana legalization initiative, with an overwhelming 62 percent “Yes” vote, 314 to 185, on Saturday.

The executive board had given no recommendation on the initiative, because “the committee was even more split than the delegates,” said State Vice Chair Sharon Smith, reports Bryce McKay at PubliCola.

“We expected this to come to a floor discussion,” Smith said. “There are some things that are clearly Democratic Party values, and then there are things like this that aren’t so clear.”

These welcome signs of the Democratic Party growing a backbone when it comes to cannabis issues are encouraging; there’s definitely a whiff of change in the air.

What’s Sarah Palin been smoking? The former Alaska Governor said Wednesday night that while she opposes marijuana legalization, law enforcement should not focus its energy on such a “minimal problem.”

Make up your mind, Sarah — should pot be legal, or not?

Palin made the comment during an appearance on the Fox Business Network with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), reports Andy Barr at Politico.

Congressman Paul, a libertarian, said that enforcing marijuana laws specifically and the War On Drugs in general is a “useless battle,” a point with which Palin partially agreed, although she made clear that she does not support legalization.

CA gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman: “I am absolutely, 100 percent not in favor of legalizing marijuana for any reason”

When it comes to gubernatorial candidates in California, marijuana advocates are seemingly forced to choose between dumb and dumber in the June 8 primary election.

“Neither party offers a significant choice,” according to the Drug Policy Forum of California, a pro-legalization group.

“I am absolutely, 100 percent not in favor of legalizing marijuana for any reason,” said GOP front-runner Meg Whitman.

Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, donated big bucks to help defeat Proposition 5, the Non-Violent Offenders Rehabilitation Act of 2008. EBay subsidiary PayPal has a policy of blackballing even legal medical marijuana businesses, according to DPF.

Oakland City Officials Come Out For Legalizing Marijuana

Could it be all that medical marijuana tax money starting to flow into city coffers?

Oakland City Attorney John Russo last week endorsed the California ballot initiative to legalize marijuana, and the City Council seems ready to join him, reports Kelly Rayburn at The Oakland Tribune.

Russo called the legalization initiative, Tax Cannabis 2010, an overdue change in California’s marijuana policy.

“What we’ve been trying to do is fight a raging fire with a watering can,” Russo said. “The better way is to cut off the oxygen.”
