I’m warning you, man… If you try it, you’re probably gonna get hooked.

If you like marijuana and movies — especially both at the same time — you will absolutely love Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide.

Over the past four decades, the stoner movie has become its own genre. With such a multitude of choices available, how to pick the right flick for your next session?
Reefer Movie Madness, the long-awaited sequel to the successful Pot Culture series from Shirley Halperin, who has written for Entertainment WeeklyUs Weekly, and Rolling Stone; and Steve Bloom, former High Times editor who now does the website CelebStoner.com, is the most extensive guide ever to feature films with specific stoner appeal.

My only warning is that you’ll be spending a lot of time with the volume, because not only is it well-written and well-researched, it’s chock full of fascinating information, anecdotes and interviews based on the culturally constructive collision of cannabis and cinema.

Up In Smoke

The pot flick has practically become a genre unto itself. Stoner movies, expressly designed for enjoyment under herbally enhanced conditions, should have their own aisle at Blockbuster.
While we’re waiting for that to happen, though, let’s take a moment to bask in the euphoric glow of accomplishment. Cannabis cinema has established a track record of success and marketability much like the herb itself.
Given the passionate loyalty potheads feel towards their very favorite stoner movies, I’d have to be ape-shit crazy to put myself in the line of fire, subjecting myself to the ire, the scorn and the second-guessing of my blunted but opinionated brethren.
So if you think I’m high enough to even try that… OK, OK. Good point.
Here are my Top 10.

We need more movies about ancient Egypt. And Greece, Rome, Babylon — wherever there were multiple gods and peasants in sandals. Give me some weed and a not-shitty action flick with sword fights and mythology, and I’m the happiest stoned idiot in the world. Enough with the fucking superheroes, already.

Seeing a strain by the name of Tutankhamon (pronounce it like this: “Toot-en-common”) at a Broadway dispensary instantly ignited my interest, and before I knew it, I was bingeing a couple of Brendan Fraser renditions of The Mummy alongside The Prince of Egypt (my choices were more limited than I thought). But smoking Tutankhamon gave me so much energy that I’d rather have hiked a few pyramids than watch movies about them.

Update, June 14, 2016: We’re back, and we hope we’ll see you again.

Since 2009, Toke of the Town has brought you the biggest marijuana news and loudest pot views from across the country — and around the world. Along the way, we’ve covered the huge progress many states have made towards legalization and wondered why others are so far behind. The country still has a long way to go, but things are looking up — and we have our fingers crossed that 2015 will be another big year for legalization.
But Toke won’t be around to see it — at least, not in its present form. This is Toke of the Town’s final day of publication.
Don’t worry: We’re not quitting the movement. We’re just returning the focus of our marijuana coverage to our local Voice Media Group papers. You can still read William Breathes’ weekly pot reviews and Ask a Stoner column at Westword.com, where they started, and you can continue to follow him on Twitter and Facebook. And you can keep following Toke on Facebook and Twitter, too, for the latest marijuana news from all our papers.
Many thanks for reading and supporting us for the past five years! We couldn’t have covered the marijuana community without such a strong one reading us.
And all our archives will remain online, because we wouldn’t want you to lose access to our serious reporting on issues of medicine and our lighthearted coverage of stoner movies.
Light one up for us, won’t you?

DJ Paul and cohorts

DJ Paul isn’t just a codeine syrup sippin’ Memphis thug. He’s an Academy Award winner alongside his Three 6 Mafia brethren for their original song “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp,” for the movie Hustle & Flow.

He’s got an album dropping September 2nd, The Killjoy Club, with the Insane Clown Posse, and another soon after with Da Mafia 6ix, who he is currently on tour with.

He’s also an avid pot head and bbq sauce impresario who loves marijuana edibles and having a good time. Here’s what he had to say about smoking Headbanger, starting a dispensary, and what he thinks of dabs.

In a new study published this week in Nature Neuroscience, European researchers claim to have proven that smoking weed does, in fact, give you the munchies. Beyond that, they appear to have isolated the specific region of the brain that is affected by THC consumption, and identified the process through which that desire to eat an entire box of Lucky Charms at 2am comes from.

So many choices…

In their study, the team of neuroscientists used a mischief of mice to conduct their herbal experimentation on, due to the cognitive similarities that mice share with humans. Roughly half the time, the mice got to get super baked, the other half they had to sit around sober as churchmice, and then…well…what happened to some of the poor critters near the end is downright freaky.
