Barbara Hoppe, council member from Columbia’s Sixth Ward, introduced legislation earlier this year that would allow people to grow up to six plants at home. Those without a medical recommendation from a doctor would face a $250 fine and the confiscation of their plants if busted. Medical patients wouldn’t face any penalties. That plan saw a lot of scrutiny, so Hoppe has rewritten her bill.
Her new plan, introduced this week and set for a hearing at the October 20 council meeting, allows for only two plants to be grown in a locked area and would allow medical patients to designate growing to a caregiver.

“I have no idea what you are talking about, officer.”

If you live in a state where marijuana is illegal – like, say, Florida – the smart thing to do is to keep your cannabis plants out of view of the general public. That means parading them around town in the back seat of your car with the top buds sticking out the rear window should be avoided at all costs. And if you do, don’t break other blatantly obvious laws like driving at night without your lights.
Apparently, Clearwater, Florida’s Justin Goodloe, 20, and Allen Barnes, 19, completely missed that memo.

Texas prisoners help clean up an illegal pot grow.

A deer hunter north of Houston, Texas stumbled upon a pot grow with as many as 100,000 plants and narc’d it out to authorities. Now, police are celebrating what is being touted as the largest grow operation busted in state history.
A hunter near the town of Goodrich, Texas says he was out rummaging around and scouting the area when he found the grow site, a campground and plenty of hidden equipment. Cops now say they growers have likely been out there for months.

Jim Denny has 7,500 square feet of hemp plants and a problem: His homeowners association has found that his plants are a violation of the HOA rules and has ordered him to “replace” them by the end of next week. The reason? The HOA board says that Denny failed to get approval for “landscaping modifications” to his lot and that his 75-foot-by-100-foot hemp plot is a home business in violation of the Todd Creek Farms HOA rules.
To comply with the board’s findings, Denny is giving away his hemp plants (and in some instances, selling them for a small fee) to anyone who is registered with the Colorado Department of Agriculture to grow industrial hemp.

Washington state medical marijuana grower Justin Loken, who after being ambushed and robbed inside his home last summer by a gang of social pariahs, whipped out a pistol and put a bullet in a couple of his assailents.
But apparently in Washington, defending your legal marijuana grow operation against hookers, pimps and robbers with a firearm will earn you a substantial federal prison sentence.

Florida lawmakers passed a CBD-only medical marijuana bill this past session, and already it seems that things are moving along to get patients the accesses to the medicine they need. According to our friends at the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, 39 nurseries have been approved to grow the low-THC cannabis.
It hasn’t been easy to get on the list, which requires — among other things — that a nursery has operated continuously for at least 30 years. Head over to The Pulp for more on just who is vying for the remaining cultivation licenses.

(Ex) Buffalo Police Officer James Hamilton is a hypocrite. On one hand, he’s a cop. His job is to bust pot dealers, growers and users in his town along with the rest of the Buffalo Police. They are good at it, too.
On the other hand, Hamilton allegedly was a mid-sized pot grower and dealer who tended a basement garden with 82 marijuana plants while on the force where he recently was named “Rookie of the Month,” according to the Buffalo News.

Hedi Fleiss from a 2008 booking photo.

Former high-profile Hollywood pimp Heidi Fleiss has been charged with several marijuana-related crimes after police say they found about 400 plants at her Pahrump, Nevada home last week while serving warrants on another woman.
Police in the small town 45 miles west of Las Vegas weren’t originally looking for Fleiss or marijuana, but say that when they scoured the property looking for their target they came upon 158 cannabis plants growing in Fleiss’s backyard.

Jim Berns.

Jim Berns, a Libertarian candidate for mayor in Cincinnati is all for ending the war on marijuana. So much so that its part of his political platform. But apparently Berns is also a fan of gimmicky advertising.
Earlier this week he sent out a press release of himself and two other men with a tray of plants. Berns is holding a sign that reads “FREE MARIJUANA PLANTS” and promised to give them away at a press conference Wednesday. Despite marijuana not being legal in Ohio for any reason, about 30 people showed up allegedly expecting ganja plants.
