A Colorado lawsuit filed this past June contends that special taxes placed on recreational marijuana sales are illegal and unconstitutional. Today, the group filing the lawsuit, No Over Taxation, has a hearing in the case. Cannabis advocates encouraging attendance contend that should the suit be successful, it could spell the end for marijuana licensing and registration regulations statewide.
Plaintiffs in the suit include marijuana activist Kathleen Chippi and Miguel Lopez, founder of the Denver 4/20 rally. Read the full breakdown as well as the official complaint at the Denver Westword.

A proposed law that would have established policing of marijuana dispensaries statewide was essentially killed in the California legislature last week.
Dale Gieringer, state coordinator of California NORML, says it’s now time to take the matter directly to voters. He envisions the possibility, in 2016, of an initiative that would ask you to approve both the legalization of recreational marijuana and the creation of a regulatory framework for all pot retailers. That could mean having the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control act as police for medical and recreational shops. More at the LA Weekly.

The Miami-Dade Democrats have a new chairman and on one hot-button issue, he’s got one of the strongest positions in the state: Sen. Dwight Bullard thinks marijuana should be legal not just for medical purposes but for recreational use.
“Marijuana, whether medical or recreational, could be another way of generating revenue in Florida,” Bullard tells Riptide. “It has a potential for real positive economic impact with real small business growth.”

What better way to celebrate the coming of summer in Colorado than with weed?

Recreational marijuana sales have been slowly climbing month to month in this state, according to recent figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue; June saw the highest sales yet. Meanwhile, medical marijuana figures are starting to show a slow decline, though they still outpaced recreational marijuana sales by approximately 18 percent. In scenes remniscent of Colorado’s recretaionl sales in January, recreational pot stores are opening with long lines and, despite high prices, they are selling out of their inventory.
Brian Budz tells Oregon Live that he thought he had enough product to last ten days at his Vancouver-based New Vansterdam shop and instead it lasted three days. Shops like his are having to close down and open erratically as more herb comes in. Prices – ranging from $15 to $30 a gram – reflect that.

The state is currently accepting new applications, with approved companies able to open as early as October 1. But even though the MMJ requirement has been removed, an applicant must still qualify as a resident of the state — for at least two years. Learn more over at Westword.com

The first recreational marijuana dispensary in Fort Collins opened its doors on June 20. Well, sort of.
Organic Alternatives had already been operating as a medical dispensary since July of last year, but didn’t obtain a local license to sell recreationally until this past Friday. But since Choice Organics, which has been selling recreationally since April 9, is technically in Larimer County, just outside Fort Collins, it’s officially FoCo’s first.
