Florida M.S. Patient Wants To Be Allowed Medical Marijuana

A Florida man is asking a judge to allow him to use marijuana to treat his multiple sclerosis after a traffic stop resulted in his arrest for pot possession.

Angel Luis Hernandez, 32, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested last year on the Florida Turnpike after a traffic stop. A search of Hernandez’s car turned up six grams of marijuana in his possession., reports David Gould of WPTV.com.

He was given a notice to appear in the 19th Judicial Circuit Court on the marijuana charges.

According to Hernandez, he’s had MS for the past 10 years, and medical marijuana is the only medication that has helped him.

Hernandez is asking to have his marijuana use declared a medical necessity.

Nice speeches… But same old Drug War.

Contrary to campaign promises and past policy statements, the Obama Administration is expanding the War on (Some) Drugs and focusing funds toward law enforcement over treatment.

Opinion? No, fact. According to 2011 funding “highlights” released this week by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the administration budgets $15.5 billion for Drug War spending in 2011, an increase of 3.5 percent over 2010.

Even more ominously, the 2011 budget represents an increase of 5.2 percent in overall enforcement funding ($9.9 billion in 2011 vs. $9.7 billion in 2010).

For the non-policy-wonks among you who aren’t into numbers, this is roughly the equivalent of throwing 15 and a half billion dollars up a wild hog’s ass and hollering “soooEEEEEE!”

Wisconsin: Medical Marijuana Patient Vigil Jan. 26, State Capitol

Gary Storck has been using marijuana medically since 1972 — but 38 years later, it’s still illegal in Wisconsin. This newspaper clipping is from 2005.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, who supports the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act, will deliver his final State of the State address before a joint meeting of the Legislature on Tuesday night, January 26, at 7 p.m. local time.

Medical marijuana supporters will hold a patient vigil at Gov. Doyle’s last official speech. Supporters will gather outside the Assembly Chambers after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, for the address, according to Gary Storck of Madison NORML.

Gov. Doyle has been on record throughout his two terms as willing to sign medical cannabis legislation if it reached his desk. Since the introduction of JMMA, he has gone further in his support, calling it “senseless” to block safe access for patients.

Activists Blast Lawmakers At Denver Marijuana Rally

Aboute 200 marijuana advocates attended the rally in Denver, across the street from the Capitol.

Marijuana advocates who rallied across the street from the state Capitol Thursday had harsh words for lawmakers considering regulations for Colorado’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry.

“Keep your grubby hands off of medical marijuana!” shouted activist Robert Chase toward the Capitol building.

About 200 marijuana backers attended the rally, timed to begin once Gov. Bill Ritter finished his State of the State speech, reports John Ingold of The Denver Post.

Rhode Island Releases Proposed Marijuana Dispensary Rules

Proposed regulations for the operation of compassion centers to dispense medical marijuana have been issued by Rhode Island health regulators, but it could still be up to a year before the first center opens, reports Mike Stanton of The Providence Journal.

“What’s a reasonable timeline? You could be talking about up to a year, or maybe it will take less time,” said Health Department spokesman Robert Vanderslice.

Oregon: Jack Herer Benefit Event Friday In Portland

Jack Herer has worked for decades for this community. Let’s show him what we can give back.

Everyone is invited to a benefit event Friday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Village Ballroom in Portland for hemp legend and author, Jack Herer.

The Village Ballroom is at 700 N.E. Dekum Street. Not so coincidentally, that means it is directly above the Oregon Cannabis Cafe, Oregon NORML’s spiffy new medical marijuana patient resource center that has received an avalanche of publicity since opening last month.

The Herer benefit is organized by The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation (THCF), and is co-sponsored by Oregon NORML and Texas-based Waco NORML.

“We are joining together to raise money for Jack Herer, who suffered a heart attack after delivering a passionate speech on stage at the Portland Hempstalk Festival this past September,” said THCF’s Paul Stanford.

Jack is recovering in Eugene, Ore., and making positive strides daily, according to Stanford. “He is a fighter and will surely overcome this obstacle to see the hemp plant restored to its rightful place in society,” Stanford told Toke of the Town.
