One amendment to SB 5073 would ban print advertising by medical marijuana dispensaries.

Version Passed By Senate Would Ban Print Advertising By Dispensaries; Law Prof Calls That ‘Clearly Unconstitutional’

The Washington Senate approved a bill Wednesday night which, if approved by the House, would legalize and regulate medical marijuana dispensaries in the state.

The bill, intended to bring the medical marijuana supply chain out of a legal gray area, was approved by senators on a 29-20 vote after lengthy debate, reports Manuel Valdes of The Associated Press. The measure now moves to the House.
Senators approved several amendments to the bill which are opposed by the medical marijuana community, including a troublesome ban on print advertising which would strip dispensaries of their First Amendment right to advertise. Distressingly, Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle), author of the bill, introduced that change.
One University of Washington law professor and First Amendment expert called the proposed ban on print advertising by dispensaries “clearly unconstitutional,” reports Curtis Cartier at Seattle Weekly.

Now it’s all in the crapper: About 6,000 pounds of marijuana was seized at a Columbus, Ohio warehouse. Another 2,000 pounds was found at a vacant condo in suburban Hilliard.

Drug Enforcement Administration officials have charged 13 people in an alleged scheme to ship tons of marijuana to Ohio stashed between packages of toilet paper.

The whole scheme went down the crapper Saturday when nearly 8,000 pounds of marijuana was found in two locations. The pot had a value of more than $5 million, claimed Anthony Marotta, the top DEA official in Columbus, Ohio, report Kathy Linn Gray and Jim Woods of The Columbus Dispatch.
Marotta said about 6,000 pounds of marijuana — more than three tons — was found hidden in a delivery of toilet paper rolls at a Columbus warehouse.
Another 2,000 pounds of pot was found in a vacant condominium in suburban Hilliard, Ohio, Marotta said.
The group allegedly used U-Haul trucks filled with toilet paper to hide the pot, authorities said, reports Ashleigh Barry of WBNS-10TV

Marc Emery, with wife Jody backing him up, speaks to reporters outside the B.C. Supreme Court in May 2010. He is scheduled to be sentenced to 5 years in U.S. federal prison on Friday, September 10.

Marijuana activists from Washington state and around North America will gather outside the Federal Courthouse at 700 Stewart Street in Seattle on Friday, September 10, to protest the sentencing of Marc Emery, the “Prince of Pot,” who faces five years in prison for selling mail-order cannabis seeds to Americans.

Cannabis advocates are calling on President Barack Obama to pardon Emery, who faced federal charges after Drug Enforcement Administration agents entered Canada and arrested him in 2005. He is expected to be sentenced to five years in federal prison under a plea agreement reached with federal prosecutors.

There’s still no word on when they plan to arrest the entire Earth for providing soil upon which marijuana “could be grown.” A hapless New Zealand garden store manager is facing a likely jail term for selling undercover police “equipment that could be used to cultivate cannabis.”

Peter James Stewart, 50, admitted five charges of supplying equipment or material that could be used to cultivate marijuana when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips on Tuesday, reports The Southland Times.

Crestview, Fla., mayoral candidate Alan Sampson was arrested back in March after police discovered a bong in his bedroom. Now he says a pack of rolling papers was planted in his house.

Crestview, Florida mayor hopeful Alan Sampson, who was charged with marijuana possession and possession of “narcotics equipment” after police reported seizing a bong from his bedroom in March, said someone broke into his home last week and left rolling papers in his bathroom drawer.

“I don’t know if someone was trying to leave me a message or if it was some of the kids in the neighborhood,” Sampson said, reports Michael Stewart at Florida Freedom Newspapers.
Sampson, who has vowed to fire Crestview Police Chgief Brian Mitchell if he’s elected mayor, said he doesn’t use rolling papers.

Now that’s a real reporter — getting the story.

The Daily Show‘s Jason Jones takes an up-close but light-hearted look at the increasingly tough competition going on in Denver’s medical marijuana dispensary scene.

Interviews with two dispensary owners — from a “mom and pop” type store and a bigger, glitzier shop — serve to highlight, in a humorous way, some of the differences and debates now shaping the future of medical marijuana.

By the way, I know The Daily Show played it for laughs… But I have to agree with the dispensary operator who has an issue with the strain name “Green Crack.”

Up In Smoke

The pot flick has practically become a genre unto itself. Stoner movies, expressly designed for enjoyment under herbally enhanced conditions, should have their own aisle at Blockbuster.
While we’re waiting for that to happen, though, let’s take a moment to bask in the euphoric glow of accomplishment. Cannabis cinema has established a track record of success and marketability much like the herb itself.
Given the passionate loyalty potheads feel towards their very favorite stoner movies, I’d have to be ape-shit crazy to put myself in the line of fire, subjecting myself to the ire, the scorn and the second-guessing of my blunted but opinionated brethren.
So if you think I’m high enough to even try that… OK, OK. Good point.
Here are my Top 10.
