It was a Happy Halloween at Lightshade Labs, judging by this photo from the store’s Facebook page. But it’s probably an even happier March, since two Lightshade branches are among the latest shops licensed by the City of Denver to sell recreational marijuana. In the two-plus weeks since our last update, Denver has okayed seven more stores, bringing the official total to 54. All of them are included here in this list compiled by Westword’s Michael Roberts, along with photos, videos, links and excerpts from reviews of the ones visited by Westword marijuana critic William Breathes. Legal marijuana sales have been going on in Colorado now for just about two months, and so far the sky hasn’t fallen. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Marijuana taxes are pumping money into state coffers and (despite high prices) the shops have all operated without any federal intervention.

It’s been one year since the State of Colorado passed Amendment 64 legalizing recreational marijuana for adults over 21, and it’s still every bit as exciting to see people smoking freely at an event. Last weekend the people of Grassroots California joined up with dispensary search engine to celebrate the year-old laws and Dab-O-Ween at popular local dance club Norad.

Is the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis, Missouri afraid of marijuana reform? Advocacy group Show-Me Cannabis says the management at the theater denied the organization’s vendor application for the Pointfest music festival — specifically because it worried about damaging its reputation. The venue apparently didn’t want to be associated with “illegal” activities.
It was especially frustrating for the group, because Show-Me Cannabis isn’t even pushing for legalization at this time — just local decriminalization reforms. Volunteers just wanted to hand out pamphlets and sell t-shirts. Riverfront Times has the story.

Some people are taking this quite literally.

This weekend, Denver’s CBS4 reported about marijuana being advertised for free on Craigslist in exchange for donations or other offers, and questioned whether the practice was legal under Amendment 64; see the video below. But the folks behind 4 Strains Pipe & Tobacco are confident they’re doing nothing wrong in offering a small amount of cannabis as a bonus to folks purchasing other merchandise.

But Second Pot Club Is Still Open For Business

The first legal recreational marijuana club in the United States has closed its doors, just one day after opening, due to a misunderstanding with the landlord, but the second club is still open for business.

The White Horse Inn opened Monday in the tiny town of Del Norte, becoming — by just a few hours — the first in Colorado to offer adults a chance to have a legal joint with their coffee, reports John Ingold at The Denver Post. When the landlord saw the publicity about Monday’s opening, he canceled the lease before it took effect, according to White Horse owner Paul Lovato. The lease didn’t start until Tuesday.
“By opening early I kind of screwed myself out of my building,” Lovato admitted on Tuesday. He had planned on having a storefront for customers to buy coffee and T-shirts, as well as other souvenirs, with a private building next door where customers could smoke free samples of cannabis.

Two Thirds of Respondents Expect Marijuana To Be Legal In Next 10 Years
A majority of people in the United States and Canada believe cannabis should be readily available for those who want to use it, a new two-country Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.
In the online survey of representative national samples, a majority of Canadians (57 percent) and Americans (54 percent) support the legalization of marijuana.
Most respondents in each Canadian region back the legalization of cannabis, including 64 percent of Atlantic Canadians and 60 percent of British Columbians.

I showed up to Hempfest on Saturday morning and the first thing that struck me as odd were all of the “No on I-502” signs, t-shirts, and buttons. 
Wait a minute… Isn’t I-502 the marijuana legalization bill set to be voted on in November?
Isn’t this the same bill that is being promoted by many leaders within the marijuana legalization movement?
Something wasn’t right.


The Denver City Council on Monday approved a ban on all outdoor medical marijuana advertising in the Mile High City.

The ban covers billboards, posters, bus benches, windshield leaflets and sign-twirlers, reports John Ingold of The Denver Post.
The unanimous vote took less than a minute. The council then voted — again unanimously — to kill an alternative plan which was more limited, and would have only banned outdoor medical marijuana ads within 1,000 feet of schools, daycare centers and parks.
