It’s been a while since the name of a strain intimidated me. Herijuana was probably the last one that made me nervous, and that was at least five years ago. But a recent trip to The Health Center Uptown had me shaking in my shoes as I walked to the cash register. I was about to smoke some Death…by Lemons.

While flavors of hard candy, vanilla, sweet cream and milk chocolate aren’t as prevalent in cannabis as the taste of soil or citrus, I prefer the sweeter strains, especially when they’re grown right. Recent experiences with Cookies and Cream, Frankenberry and Hazelnut Cream had me hungry for something sugary during my holiday break, and a trip to Lightshade presented me with a sweet opportunity in Mother’s Milk.
A few small dustings notwithstanding, snow has been seriously lacking in Denver this year. Not willing to fly to Miami or drive to Aspen for a taste of the white stuff in which those ritzy towns indulge, I looked for the classic cannabis version, Snowcap, at local dispensaries. After some searching, I finally found it. Like a heavyweight champion from the ’60s, Snowcap — with a strength and trichome production that made it famous — has been passed over for newer, more potent strains, but it’s still not to be trifled with.
It doesn’t really matter what part of the world a strain comes from, but all things being equal, I’ll choose the local bud. My lungs swell with pride whenever I inhale a hit of Commerce City Kush or Colorado Cough, so my choice was easy when I saw Denver Maple on the menu at Ballpark Holistic Dispensary.

Finding new strains isn’t as easy as it used to be — or at least it’s not as easy to pass off new strains as new.
Thanks to Leafly, SeedFinder.eu and other online strain databases, connoisseurs can learn about the extensive family trees of strains, varieties of cannabis that haven’t gone national yet, and just how full of shit their weed dealers have been. Even with all of that information, though, legal pot’s explosion has led to a boom of genetics that continue to surprise me. The latest example? Hazelnut Cream.
