Last time we thought it was some sick joke when Obama came to fundraise in San Francisco on April 20, the pot smoker’s holiday, after having changed his stance and began his reversal on medical marijuana in California.

Today, no one was laughing.

One year after Arizona residents voted to legalize medical marijuana, things are falling into place for patients in Phoenix to get safe access to their medicine.

The doors of Elements Caregiver Collective, which calls itself “the one-stop-shop for medical marijuana, wellness services and products,” will open with a job fair, patient fair and grand opening event on Sunday, November 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The caregiver collective, located 12620 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, said it offers a secure, safe, environment for caregivers to provide wellness services and cannabis to patient members.

RAND Retracts Report Showing Cannabis Dispensaries Lower Crime

Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich’s office was “vocal” in its criticism of last month’s RAND report showing that crime went up in neighborhoods when dispensaries were forced to close — so RAND took their own report off their website on October 11, and officially retracted the report today, Monday, October 24.

After “vocal criticism” from the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, the RAND Corporation on Monday officially retracted its study “Regulating Medical Marijuana Dispensaries: An Overview with Preliminary Evidence of Their Impact on Crime,” which was released in September.

Two weeks ago, RAND had pulled the study off its website and posted a notice that “This document has been withdrawn pending further review.” Toke of the Town broke that story before it hit the national newswires.

“The L.A. City Attorney’s office has been the organization most vocal in its criticism of the study, questioning its methods and conclusions,” RAND media relations guy Warren Robak told Toke of the Town on October 11.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer won’t allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open in her state, and now she’s trying to shut down the clubs that opened to provide safe access while patients wait for dispensaries.

The lawyer for one of Arizona’s medical marijuana clubs on Friday accused the governor and state attorney general of conspiring to undermine the voter-approved initiative legalizing cannabis for medicinal use.

“We believe that there’s a clear and blatant pattern that has transpired over the last few months,” said Thomas Dean, reports Howard Fischer at Capitol Media Services. Dean said that both Gov. Jan Brewer and Atty. Gen. Tom Horne had worked to stymie the will of the voters.

“There’s plenty of evidence that it was done in a way that was conspiratorial, fraudulent,” Dean told Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Dean Fink.

Dean told the judge he wants to question both Gov. Brewer and Atty. Gen. Horne under oath to prove his point.

But that’s not going to happen, at least not in the way Dean envisions, Assistant Attorney General Lori Davis told the judge.

Federal Threats Get Results: CA Marijuana Dispensaries Close

Dispensaries in California appear to be closing as a result of the federal crackdown on medical marijuana.

In conservative Orange County, a threatening letter from federal prosecutors achieved what nearly $600,000 in legal fees couldn’t — shutting down the dispensaries, reports the Associated Press.

All eight collectives that had occupied the second floor of a mini-mall in Lake Forest have closed since California’s four U.S. Attorneys announced a couple of weeks ago that they were cracking down on medicinal cannabis sales in the state, reports Greg Risling at the Associated Press.

The healthy competition between the eight dispensaries at the Lake Forest mall was good for everyone, local patient Melissa Morales told Toke of the Town.

“It was like heaven,” Morales told us on Friday. “I got treated like a queen. One of the collectives had a frequent buyer program punch card. You got a free eighth after 10 donations and a free preroll with any edible.”

Witness Arrested After Testifying At Medical Marijuana Hearing

A witness was arrested Tuesday in California after he testified in the preliminary hearing of another man facing felony charges of cultivating marijuana and possessing it for sale.

Deputies grabbed Jeffrey Lee Sanford in Butte County Superior Court after his testimony at Timothy Ole Skytte’s preliminary hearing, reports Ryan Olson of Chico ER. Skytte was arrested on August 18 after deputies found 54 marijuana plants growing on his property in Concow. Officers also found 369 more plants on a property Skytte rented to another man identified as Lawrence Evans.

“It is obvious that Butte County is using this oppressive tactic to suppress people from testifying in defense of medical providers and it is this type of behavior that challenges the fabric of our democracy,” said Mickey Martin of the website Cannabis Warrior.

Two-Thirds Of Seattle’s 105 Marijuana Dispensaries Are Licensed

Of Seattle’s 105 medical marijuana dispensaries, almost two-thirds — 68 — have business licenses, according to a report in alternative weekly The Stranger.

“We only have 68 dispensaries currently licensed in our system,” said Denise Movius, a spokeswoman for Seattle’s business licensing division, reports Q13 Fox News Online. “We’ve gotten the names of the rest by reading The Stranger and other advertisements.”

The business licensing division has been contacting the out-of-compliance shops to remind them they need the $90 business licenses.

California state Senator Mark Leno: “I urge the federal government to stand down in its massive attack on medical marijuana dispensaries”

Two California lawmakers on Wednesday joined medical marijuana patients, dispensary operators and advocates to call for an immediate end to the federal government’s broad crackdown on dispensaries.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors announced plans for sweeping criminal prosecutions against medical marijuana dispensaries across California, threatening landlords with eviction, property seizures and even imprisonment.

“I urge the federal government to stand down in its massive attack on medical marijuana dispensaries, which will have devastating impacts for the state of California,” said Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). “At a time when resources are precious and few, federal officials have chosen to waste time and money in an ambush that will harm countless patients who will no longer be able to safely access doctor-recommended treatments.”

Breaking: DEA Raiding Medical Marijuana Grow In Mendocino

This was the beautiful cannabis garden at Northstone Organics on August 3. As you read this, federal DEA agents are destroying these plants, and patients are going without the medicine they need.

Federal agents are reportedly raiding the garden of Northstone Organics, a pioneering participant in Mendocino County, California’s innovative “zip-tie” program to license medical marijuana gardens.

Mendocino County’s zip tie program, overseen by Sheriff Tom Allman, allows legal medicinal growers to purchase zip ties from the county to designate their plants as legal.

California NORML Coordinator Dale Gieringer denounced the raid as a “shameful and despicable” attack on California’s most successful legally regulated marijuana cultivation program.

“The DEA is doing nothing but encouraging lawlessness and disobedience to the law,” Gieringer said. “This is a victory for the Mexican cartels.”

Rally Tuesday In San Diego To Defend Medical Marijuana

Members of the California Cannabis Coalition invite you to join them in San Diego on Tuesday, October 18 from noon to 2 p.m., for a rally to defend medical marijuana coops and collectives

Attorney General Eric Holder has said he will no longer respect the rights of patients or the laws of California and is prosecuting medical marijuana collectives and cooperatives.

Activists with the California Cannabis Coalition are responding this Tuesday, October 18, with a rally to defend medicinal cannabis, from 12 noon until 2 p.m., in San Diego. The rally will begin at the Civic Center, 1200 Third Avenue, at noon and go from there to the Federal Building, 880 Front Street.

In San Diego, the local U.S. Attorney, Laura Duffy, has issued letters to every medical marijuana collective and their landlords ordering that they cease operation within 45 days, or federal officials will confiscate the buildings in which they reside.
