There’s growing talk about a medical marijuana bill being submitted in West Virginia in the coming months, with Del. Mike Manypenny announcing last week that he will make a fourth attempt at winning over his fellow lawmakers.
While the bill does face considerable challenges in the conservative state, Manypenny’s last bill in 2013 managed to get nine co-sponsors as well as a hearing before the House Health and Human Resources Committee before failing to move forward to the House floor.
A new St. Cloud State University survey shows that the overwhelming majority of Minnesotans favor legalizing marijuana for medical purposes.More than three-fourths of people interviewed in late October — 76 percent — answered yes to the question, “Would you support or oppose making marijuana legally available for doctors to prescribe?”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett doesn’t want to seem square on medical marijuana or be accused of being tough on sick citizens of his fine state, but he’s not doing a very good job of it.
Take his statements this week that he would totally support medical marijuana if the federal government were to give their approval, though he won’t do anything about challenging that in defense of sick Pennsylvanians in the meantime.
Supporters of an embattled ballot measure to create a constitutional amendment in Florida allowing for medical cannabis say they have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot this November.
Ben Pollara, who is heading up the People for United Medical Marijuana campaign, says that the campaign will hit one million signatures sometime next week – hundreds of thousands more than the 683,000 valid signatures required by state law.
While New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will no doubt get some political points for sidestepping the legislature and finally allowing medical marijuana in his state, the program is extremely limited and leaves some once-hopeful medical cannabis supporters without options.
Notably: the cannabis that will be dispensed through a limited number of hospitals likely won’t be varied enough to include high-CBD strains so beneficial for things like pain and seizure management.

Tennessee state Rep. Sherry Jones has stepped up to the plate for medical marijuana supporters in her state by introducing a bill that would legalize the plant for medical uses with a doctor’s recommendation. Now she just needs a state Senator to back her.
Language of the bill is not available at the state legislative site yet, but Jones says her bill will set qualifying conditions for medical cannabis as well as legalize the creation of state-regulated “pharmacies” to sell organically-grown herb to patients.
The push to legalize medical marijuana in Florida is nearing its final days, and the group responsible for collecting the petitions to force a vote in November is driving hard to the hoop to make that happen. United for Care, the group behind the massive petition drive, has until February 1 to turn in 700,000 signatures.
“It looks like we have around 1.1 million,” Ben Pollara, campaign director for United for Care, said yesterday. The Broward-Palm Beach New Times has the details.

The teenage years are an awkward time for everybody. High school can be especially tough, just trying to fit in, particularly if you have any sort of disability. 15-year-old Noah Kirkman, a 10th-grade student at Western Canada High School knows about these pressures all too well, growing up with attention-deficit disorder and Tourette syndrome.
While he is far from the first high school student to have to deal with such issues, he appears to be one of the first students to have been granted permission by his school to use medical marijuana, while on campus, to treat his ailments. That’s right, three times a day the young man walks right past the Principal’s office, and into the Vice Principal’s office for a quick rip, or two or three, off of his handheld herbal vaporizer.
Medical marijuana could be coming to New York sooner than later, with a plan from Gov. Andrew Cuomo coming in a few days that could allow hospitals to dispense the herb.
Members of Cuomo’s staff leaked the plan Saturday to State Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, a medical marijuana advocate who has pushed for legislation in the past. Gottfried called the program “limited and cumbersome,” but conceded that it’s a step in the right direction.
