Jennifer Lynn Sopanos, 35, of Florence, was charged with "chemical endangerment of a child," reports The Associated Press.
Sopanos' baby boy was born March 16 at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. Police claim the baby tested positive for THC, a principal psychoactive in cannabis. The mother also tested positive, according to Keith Johnson, a police detective.
Sopanos has denied using marijuana in her pregnancy, according to Johnson. She said the positive test was due to second-hand cannabis smoke.
Exactly how Sopanos would be "chemically endangering" her child is far from clear, since according to the best scientific research available, marijuana use by pregnant woman may actually reduce infant mortality.
Mothers who took no drugs at all had 15.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to the study. Mothers who tested positive for cocaine had 17.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, and mothers who tested positive for opiates had 18.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.
But mothers who tested positive for cannabis had only 8.9 deaths per 1,000 live births. In other words, drug-free mothers have 57 percent more stillbirths than mothers who used marijuana during pregnancy.
The benefits to babies don't end there. The scientific research tells us that toking mothers have babies that are just as healthy (if not healthier; see above) as babies born of non-toking mothers.
And you know what else the research showed?
That the babies of pot-smoking mothers scored better on laboratory tests of cognition than babies of non-toking mothers.
It makes sense, after all. Mother's milk naturally contains the body's own THC-like substances, the endocannabinoids, which exert a number of beneficial effects on the baby, including stimulating appetite and improving sleep patterns.
Mothers give their babies a booster shot of the body's own cannabinoids in breast milk to give them the munchies, because they have to learn to eat, according to Dr. Robert Melamede, one of the leading researchers into endocannabinoids and their effects.
So believe anything you want, Alabama -- but if you're interested in science?
Science says pot-smoking moms have healthier, smarter babies than anyone else.

It gets quite tiring hearing brainwashed morons spouting government propaganda instead of science. The studies are out there, let's have a discussion based on science instead of how you 'feel'. Marijuana is good for you. Read the 'Tashkin' study about how it has a 'protective effect on lungs', the Harvard study that shows cannabis can 'cut tumor size in half and significantly reduces cancers ability to spread', and finally, the governments own US infant mortality chart which clearly shows that the babies with the lowest infant mortality by far than any other group, are babies born with cannabis in their system. Look at the statistics, they don't lie, according to the governments own study, the very best chance a newborn has for survival statistically is for it's mom to be using cannabis. With such significant numbers, cannabis babies survive at a much higher rate than babies born to non cannabis using mothers, it should be highly recommended like folic acid for the best health of the baby. I think the law enforcement agency that is terrorizing this family should be arrested for being too dumb to read the science.

Why do doctors say its okay to take pills while pregnant?? I have a friend who was pregnant and had to take pills prescribed by her doctor and She asked him, " Will it hurt my baby?' No says the Doctor. Well when she had her baby girl. She came out wrong. She can't move, talk. she just lays there. Now my friend had to sue her Doctor who prescriped her pills and said it won't hurt the baby. Her daughter can't even go to school, prom, learn how to drive, or even get married.. Its soo sad to see her like that. Have any of you ever hear about anyone dying from Marijuana? NO! People die from alcohol, hard drugs like cocaine, herion, meth etc.. I don't think Mothers should do any of these while pregnant. PERIOD! Marijuana used to be LEGAL here in the U.S.. There are millions of people who smoke weed are good people. They pay taxes, go to work everyday, take care of their family, pay thier bills, and help with thier illness. etc... I think alcohol should be illegal. The drunks can't even stay off the roads and killing innocent people, being violent with people and even die from alcohol poisoning. Does smoking weed do this?? NO!! Well first of all weed is the gate way drug. Every person i know that smokes weed either does other drugs or has done other drugs. And has either been in trouble with the law or is in trouble with the law. I have six children and i came real close to losing my daughter cuz i decided to dovsome cocaine when i was 24 weeks pregnant the baby was negative but iwas positive. She was born at 28 weeks. They test your blood automatically when you give birth. Especially if its premature. But they arent looking for that it just shows up.

Yeah, because we all know that the government has always been a WONDERFUL source to base our morality on. You might recall that one little incident in our past I like to call SLAVERY. The government not only allowed it, but declared the freeing of slaves to be a crime. But of course if its illegal, it must be wrong. Every study ever conducted shows that breast milk is superior to baby formula, but people still spend money on baby formula when breast milk is free and better. If you don't have time, maybe you could put all the money from baby formula to a breast milk pump, which in the end is cheaper and still better for the kid. Yet do we cuss out mothers who buy formula? I certainly haven't heard of anybody being that trashy. So if its possible that THC is GOOD for the child, who are you to cuss out a pot-smoking mom? I think drinking alcohol is way worse than smoking weed. But you are right we shouldn't do drugs or alcohol while pregnant. but they can do so after the baby is born. Marjiuana used to be legal here in the U.S. You don't see anyone die from smoking pot or getting in car accidents. You can die from alcohol, and other hard drugs, and pills prescribed by a doctor. Those who smoke weed and have kids, are not bad parents at all. They work and pay bills and take care of there kids. Why do doctors say its okay to take pills while pregnant?? I know the father of this baby. I have a 7 year old by him. These people are both drug addicts and they definitely weren't thinking about the good side effects of smoking pot while pregnant let alone the bad. They are selfish people and were only thinking of themselves. What scares me is that while this mother is in jail the baby is probably left with the father. He does not know how to handle a toddler let alone an infant which is why I left him when my daughter was a year old and never looked back.

2 Different DOCTOR's recommended I smoke MJ. I had hyperemisis (Can't stop puking, look it up for those that do not know what it is.) I was hospitalized 4 times in the first 6 months of pregnancy with my second for dehydration due to excessive puking. None of the prescribed drugs worked and I would have rather had a natural substance than the medical pharmaceutical concoction big pharma mixed up for me to take. During my first pregnancy the Dr. explained that it is way better to have mj in the blood than nicotine.
This is just criminal and unacceptable. That baby needs its mother but chances are it is in CPS custody. They can expect CPS to be in their lives till the child turns 18. Chances are she was on medicaid. Medicaid tells you up front you better be clean when you deliver because after you deliver, we check your baby and then we come back once every 3 months and check you. It's called the 'police state'. I have watched our freedoms being taken away one at a time over many years.

I think charging this woman is a crime. I have two kids and while I was pregnant my MIDWIFE (don't trust doctors) told me "Do everything just like you always do, you're not sick" so I blazed right thru two pregnancies and I have two perfect Honor-Roll kids. My son, 16, has a God-given musical gift. The kid can play anything with strings. I never had any kind of "Labor Pains" and had natural childbirth both times. My daughter, now 14, tested positive for THC at birth (not my son, dunno why) Detroit didn't really have much to say about it. A social worker came to my house -once. Found it "adequate" and that was it. I gave both my kids small amounts (a teaspoon in 8 oz of formula) of Bhang as babies too, when we started adding new foods -stops spitting up COMPLETELY when they transition to solid foods and makes the adjustment easier. Additionally, neither of my kids have ANY allergies, which is pretty unusual, at least among their friends. Of course, today I embarrass the hell out of them and they're both Anti-Pot (LOL!!) but, thats okay while they're teenagers, it could save me a lot of bullshit. :)

It is one thing to have your personal beliefs, but your just refuting scientific evidence all together, and actually they have found that many of the THC pills are ineffective because they are unable to isolate all of the useful canabinoids that come from the plant itself. Maybe you should check your facts before posting because this statement is not true. Not all babies are drug tested prior to leaving hospital. My baby has never been drug tested. They drug test babies of mothers on medicare/medicaid. I have a job with health insurance. If the government has to pay your medical bills, then yeah they're going to drug test you and your baby, duh.
(i could be wrong) but i think they test the babies on medicaid. with my first son, we had medicaid which required us to take child birth classes. the instructor told us during our first class that we could be drug tested at any random time, and our babies could be taken away. with our second son we had blue cross, and even though i had the same doctor for both pregnancies, she didn't ask the same questions she was required to with medicaid.
