In the late 1970s, Robert “The Tuna” Platshorn was a marijuana smuggler and leader of South Florida’s notorious “Black Tuna” gang.
Now, after spending 30 years in prison, Platshorn, 70, is a book author (Black Tuna Diaries), subject of a documentary film (Square Grouper) — and an activist working to make medical marijuana legal in the Sunshine State.
The goal of The Silver Tour, according to Platshorn, is to educate and inform seniors on the benefits and exciting discoveries in the medical cannabis field, and to encourage activism for legalization and create demand for safe access to medical marijuana.

”Seniors vote and they talk to their representatives,” Platshorn said.
Platshorn, one of America’s most famous pitchmen, at age 24 founded the largest chain of schools in Europe.
By age 34, he was a major marijuana smuggler from Colombia to the United States, bringing in tons of Santa Marta Gold.
Through the Silver Tour, Platshorn brings the truth about marijuana to senior citizens in Florida and nationwide. One of the biggest events yet on that tour will take place on Sunday, January 29, in Boynton Beach, Florida.
The show, “Learn the Real Facts About Medical Marijuana,” will be free and all ages are welcome. It will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 29, at the Temple Shaarei Shalom in Boynton Beach.
Besides Platshorn’s presentation, there will be a screening of the film Cannabis Science, which features Dr. Donald Abrams, Dr. Robert Melamede, and Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, among other medical marijuana experts.
Mary Lynn Mathre, RSN, MSN, CARN and Al Byrne, LCDR (USN Ret.), both of Patients Out of Time, will be on hand as well. Mathre edited the book Cannabis In Medical Practice. Patients Out of Time provides the only AMA accredited cannabis continuing education courses for physicians, nurses, lawyers and caregivers, administered by The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.
