Why You Should Vote No On I-502

Washington state’s I-502 was carefully crafted to look like “responsible” cannabis legalization to the general public. Unfortunately, in trying too hard to appease law enforcement and other opponents of legalization, I-502 creates a list of brand new threats to medical cannabis patients and providers without actually legalizing marijuana.

I-502 only decriminalizes possession of an ounce or less of cannabis and only applies to adults, 21 and older, who purchase cannabis from a state licensed store with heavy taxes.

We can’t allow this initiative to set national standards for other legalization initiatives in other states, nor can we stand by and allow it to pass, knowing the years of trouble it will take to try and fix this terrible initiative. Meanwhile, many patients will lose their driving rights and be forced back to the black market for medicine.

We have to come together to oppose this initiative and send our own message; that changes in policy need to be good changes, not just any changes, and that patients can organize and defeat threats against us.

The National Association for the Advancement for Colored People (NAACP) Alaska Oregon Washington State-Area Conference (AOWS-AC) has endorsed Oregon Measure 80, the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act and calls on voters who are committed to equality and civil justice to vote for Measure 80 on this November’s ballot.

“Our nation’s long, tragic, failed war on drugs has taken a disproportionate toll on people of color,” said NAACP AOWS-AC President Oscar Eason, Jr. “To right the wrongs of the past, we need to end the drug war immediately and replace it with a common-sense approach.”

With Hempfest just over a week away, I’m looking forward to once again having an opportunity to see old friends and make new ones at the protestival, and to maybe reach a few folks from the stage as well (I’m once again scheduled to speak all three days; the exact speaker schedules aren’t yet released).

New Marijuana Legalization Documentary To Screen In Seattle

Seattle Hempfest and two Seattle churches will host sneak previews of the new cannabis documentary Legalize It, a “socially conscious” film on Proposition 19, the 2010 campaign to legalize marijuana in California.

Scenes from the film will be shown at Seattle Hempfest on Saturday, August 18 in the afternoon in the Hemposium, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and film participants. Participants include Presidential candidate Governor Gary Johnson, his running mate Judge Jim Gray, Dan Rush (director, National Medical Cannabis & Hemp Division at UFCW) and I-502 “legalization” advocate and celebrity trophy wife Jodie Emery.

Many Cannabis Patients Can Drive Motor Vehicles Safely While Medicated, According To Study

Cannabis-based medications have been demonstrated to relieve pain, and can be useful for patients whose symptoms aren’t adequately alleviated by conventional treatment, according to a paper in a peer-reviewed German medical journal.

The symptoms shown to have been alleviated by marijuana-based medicines include muscle spasms, nausea and vomiting resulting from chemotherapy, loss of appetite in HIV/AIDS patients, and neuropathic pain, according to the paper, published in Issue 29-30 of Deutsches Arzteblatt International, the German Medical Association’s official international peer-reviewed science journal, reports Science Daily.

“Medications based on cannabis have been used for therapeutic purposes in many cultures for centuries,” the paper notes. “In Europe, they were used at the end of the 19th century to treat pain, spasms, asthma, sleep disorders, depression, and loss of appetite.”

It’s been a long wait — too long, for many patients who never lived to see the day — but legal medical marijuana is coming to New Jersey.

The New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act reached will reach a major milestone on Thursday when the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services opens the patient registration process. Doctors who are treating qualifying patients will then be able to enter those patients into the patient registration system.

The United States federal government can spy on the communications of Americans without warrants and without fear of being sued, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday. The decision reversed the one and only case that ever successfully challenged former President George W. Bush’s Terrorist Surveillance Program.

“This case effectively brings to an end the plaintiffs’ ongoing attempts to hold the executive branch responsible for intercepting telephone conversations without judicial authorization,” wrote a three-judge panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals [PDF].
