At the time of this tiny news brief from the May 16, 1903 Glenwood Post, “hasheesh” was being blamed for all of the crime and “insanity” in Egypt. Efforts to stamp it out resulted in sixteen tons of hash being confiscated in the country for the year 1901.
The population of Egypt at the time was somewhere around 8 million people, according to historical sources. The population of Colorado, currently, is around 5.1 million people — and they use a lot, lot more…

We reported earlier this week that all hopes for medical marijuana in Minnesota this year were gone. We’re happy to report we were wrong.
A bill legalizing the use, cultivation and sales of medical cannabis introduced last year by State Senator Scott Dibble, a Democrat from Minneapolis, will be considered by a state Senate committee later today.

Almost every Friday for the last year, Denver Westword has dug up a vintage marijuana-related news article from a treasure trove of small town newspapers. Here’s an old Cannabis Time Capsule they’ve dug up from nearly 136 years ago. It appeared in the now-defunct Colorado Banner newspaper out of Boulder. This December 13, 1877 brief details the schemes of a Philadelphia snake-oil salesman hooking unsuspecting victims on the opium-like wonders of hashish! Cue scary music.

Retronaut.com is a seriously cool site for fans of quirky, odd historical photos as evidenced by these three strangely hysterical shots of cops and a scraggly little pot plant.
We don’t have much information on these photos, other than they are from the Van Nuys police department from 1951 and somehow wound up as part of the University of Southern California. Apparently someone sent a pot plant to the jail without any explanation and the cops had no idea what to do with it, or themselves.
