Shawn Porter’s marijuana joke landed him in jail with felony pot charges

Hey, stoner, don’t make pot jokes in the drive-through line. A Florida man tried to add some high humor to his drive-through order at Burger King, but when he asked for “a blunt and some herbs,” the store called the cops and the man ended up in jail on felony marijuana charges.

Shawn Porter, 32, of Deltona, is being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail near Daytona Beach with bail set at $1,000, reports Gary Taylor at the Orlando Sentinel.

It all started innocently enough, with a late-night munchie run to the Burger King in Deltona, according to Volusia County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Gary Davidson.

Porter and another man pulled into to the drive-through lane in a white Saturn just before 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. When it came time to order, one of them yelled out that he wanted “a blunt and some herbs,” Davidson said.

The Weed Wars are on, and at stake are television ratings. In the next couple of weeks we’ll start to see the bounty of this year’s harvest of cannabis-centric TV hitting the airwaves.

The ever-present Steve DeAngelo has his reality series starting on the Discovery Channel a la Kiss’s Gene Simmons: depicting a world class guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders yet he has time to take his kid to Little League. Just a regular guy and family man who happens to like to bang the gong at the end of the day. America won’t believe their eyes.

This Friday the National Geographic Channel is joining the Cannafest with the premiere of Marijuana Gold Rush. Depicting the many highs and a few lows of this past year’s emerging dream of bringing cannabis into the mainstream, going from the boardrooms of New York to our own Mendocino County’s Emerald Cup, with the participants not knowing what really is to come.

It’s the season for giving, and one great way to make your favorite pothead think of you on a regular basis — every time they wear it — get him or her a t-shirt. Petitions relating to the legalization of marijuana far exceed those on any other subject posted to a U.S. government website designed to garner citizen feedback described as “an experiment in democracy.”

During the first two months since the Obama Administration launched the We The People petition website, 119 active petitions were posted on November 14; petitions that fail to meet the 25,000-signature threshold after 30 days are removed from the site and archived, reports Joseph Marks at Nextgov.

The love affair between pizza and marijuana is no secret, so Denver-based Sexy Pizza thought it would use this culinary romance to raise funds for a group of law enforcement officials dedicated to reforming failed drug policies in America.

Toke of the Town editor Steve Elliott: You’ve come to the right place if you wanna talk about marijuana.

Two years ago today — actually two years ago tonight, at 7:08 p.m. — fingers trembling with excitement, I hit the “Post” button for the first-ever story on Toke of the Town.

“The good thing about a free marketplace of ideas is,” I wrote, in the first sentence ever to appear on this site, “despite the best efforts of prohibitionists and their fear-mongering propaganda, the truth eventually prevails.”

Thousands of stories, joints, medibles, and bongloads later, I’m still loving this gig, and judging by pageviews, so are more than half a million of you every month.

Toke didn’t just happen. If it hadn’t been for Village Voice Media’s then-social media talent scout, John Boitnott, spotting my personal blog Reality Catcher making the front page of social news-sharing site Digg, I wouldn’t have had the chance, starting early in 2009, to write “Chronic City.” That was a twice-weekly cannabis column for S.F. Weekly‘s online blog, “The Snitch.”

And if it hadn’t been for Boitnoitt and Bill Jensen, then in charge of VVM’s web presence worldwide, that well-received column would not have opened the door for Toke of the Town about six months later.

High Times Cannabis Cup Shut Down By Cops In Amsterdam

Police shut down the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam today. It will be relocated and is still a “go.”

The 24th annual High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, for the first time in its history, has been raided by Dutch police. According to reports, attendees were searched as they left the event.

The unprecedented raid comes as a wave of more conservative cannabis policies and attitudes engulfs the Netherlands.

In a video posted to YouTube, police can be heard announcing the event was being shut down and that attendees are subject to search, reports High Times. Vendors were asked to remain at their booths while attendees left.

High Times has announced that the event will continue Wednesday night with a scheduled concert at the Melkweg a concert hall in Amsterdam, followed by a full day of the expo — including Cannabis Cup voting — at the Borchland (Borchlandweg) on Thursday, the final day of the competition.

I am Thankful for the activists and the good people I’ve met this year at rallies and protests who’ve come out and made a difference.

I am Thankful for the lawyers and the leaders who take on unchecked, abusive power-dogs who threaten the movement and counteract with lawsuits and intelligence, never giving up the fight on our behalf.

I am Thankful for Lynnette Shaw and Marin Alliance for being the first legal dispensary to open in the country, and Thankful that when she was told to close, she’s said “No!”

I am Thankful for all the patients that the Divinity Tree in San Francisco reached and ministered to. I am Thankful that Charlie and the gang had at least five years to present an ideal dispensary model to the City and they did. I’m Thankful for the education and medicine that I received there.

Nebraska Agrees To Allow Pro-Marijuana License Plates

Dude’s gonna get his plates after all.

After initially saying no, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles relented on Monday, agreeing to issue pro-marijuana license plates to a Holbrook man.

Frank Shoemaker had sued the state Thursday in federal court, saying Nebraska’s refusal to grant him “NE420” plates violated his Constitutional right to free speech, reports Peter Salter at the Lincoln Journal Star.
