Dogs Nab 2 Marijuana Dispensary Robbers

Robbing medical marijuana dispensaries is a really bad idea. Two Colorado men are in police custody after being accused of robbing a dispensary in Fort Collins and tying up three employees at gunpoint. They were arrested by police and deputies after they “sustained injuries” from the two law enforcement dogs used to capture them.

Ernie Jermaine Savannah, 39, and Jeremiah Wright, 40, face charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, vehicular eluding and resisting arrest, i.e., it’ll be awhile before these fellows see daylight again. They were arrested at Fort Collins Police Services headquarters on Sunday, reports Trevor Hughes at Coloradoan.com.

Celebrity Montel Williams is part of one nonprofit group trying for a license to operate a medical marijuana dispensary and cultivation facilities in the District of Columbia.

The Abatin Wellness Center has expressed “preliminary interest” in opening medical marijuana businesses in the city, according to D.C. records, reports Mike DeBonis at The Washington Post. Montel is already the public face of a dispensary by the same name which opened this year in Sacramento, California.

Ann Arbor Sets Marijuana Dispensary Application Fee At $600

The Ann Arbor City Council voted unanimously at its August 15 meeting to establish an application fee of $600 for licenses to operate a medical marijuana dispensary in the Michigan city.

According to city officials, the application fee covers a total of about nine hours of work by staff in the city clerk’s office, police department, planning department, and the city attorney’s office, reports The Ann Arbor Chronicle.

It sounds as if prospective dispensary owners won’t be through paying money to the city even after they cough up the six Benjamins. The ordinance distinguishes between an “application fee” (which this is) and a “license fee.” License fees, according to city ordinance, are to be reviewed by a licensing board, the members of which will be appointed by Mayor John Hieftje.

New D.C. Medical Marijuana Rules Highlight Federal Prosecution

Applicants for the District of Columbia’s medical marijuana program are now required to state in writing that they assume the risk of federal prosecution for growing or distributing cannabis, and that they cannot hold the city liable for arrests, according to newly revised rules.

The rules for the long-awaited program, published on Friday, for the first time pointedly mention federal prosecution because a Department of Justice memo from June says the federal government still considers marijuana a controlled substance, reports Tom Howell Jr. at The Washington Times.

A courier delivering medical marijuana to what he thought was a dispensary was mugged for $20,000 worth of cannabis by three men, according to police in Fullerton, California.

Police said the trio set up a fake medical marijuana dispensary in a commercial building in Fullerton, even painting a green cross on the outside wall of the building, reports Dennis Romero at LA Weekly.

“These suspects had spent some time putting this ruse together, putting the order in and finding a building that worked for what they were trying to do,” said Sgt. Andrew Goodrich of the Fullerton Police Department, reports Eileen Frere at ABC 7.

Montana Appeals Decision Blocking Med Marijuana Restrictions

Montana on Tuesday appealed to the Montana Supreme Court a judge’s ruling which blocked tight new restrictions on medical marijuana on the state, and will argue there’s no constitutional right to sell cannabis for a profit. The new restrictions have been described by some patient advocates as a de facto repeal of Montana’s medical marijuana law, passed by 62 percent of the state’s voters in 2000.

The Montana Justice Department will ask the state’s high court to overturn portions of Helena District Judge James Reynolds’ decision from June 30, which suspended enforcement of several provisions of the tough new law passed the the Republican-dominated 2011 Legislature to crack down on the state’s growing medical marijuana industry, reports Mike Dennison at the Billings Gazette.

Marijuana Dispensary Owner Nabs Smash-and-Grab Suspect

A California man accused of breaking into and burglarizing three medical marijuana dispensaries is now behind bars after being nabbed by a collective owner.

Jose Ramon Vidrio, 20, of Redlands, was arrested on suspicion of trying to smash the front window of Disabled American Veterans Collective cannabis dispensary in French Valley, reports Maggie Avants at the Temecula Patch.

The dispensary owner told deputies that around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Vidrio tried to smash the window with a concrete block. After he screwed that up — he was unable to break the glass — he allegedly tried to flee the area in his car.

Arizona Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Cannabis Clubs

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne says he’s “taking a softer approach” and “trying to be a good guy” by not just having the clubs raided and their employees arrested

Attorney General Tom Horne of Arizona on Monday filed a civil action agains four medical cannabis clubs, trying to stop them from providing patients with marijuana under the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act. The cannabis clubs have sprung up to provide safe access to patients since dispensaries aren’t yet allowed to open in Arizona, pending a judge’s ruling.

The motion, filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, names four clubs and one individual reports Ray Stern at Phoenix New Times: The 2811 Club, Arizona Compassion Association, Yoki A Ma’ Club, Arizona Compassion Club and Michael R. Miller.

Horne wants a judge’s ruling that the clubs aren’t legal. He also seeks an injunction to stop them from selling marijuana. He claims he’s “taking a softer approach” and “trying to be a good guy” by not just having the clubs raided and their employes arrested.
