NFL Star and Former Pothead Ricky Williams Hates Weed Jokes

Ricky Williams doesn’t think weed jokes are funny.

National Football League star Ricky Williams — caught multiple times for smoking weed — doesn’t think your weed jokes are funny. In fact, one of the reasons he doesn’t use Twitter much is the constant barrage of pot punchlines, the football hero tweeted on Friday.

Williams, of the Baltimore Ravens, has quite a history with marijuana himself, reports Zach Wilt at the Baltimore Sports Report. The former Miami Dolphins running back supposedly “retired from football” after facing a whopping $650,000 fine for failing a piss test in December 2003 (his second such transgression), violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
After taking 2004 off, he returned to the Dolphins in 2005, but failed yet another drug test after the season, which this time earned him a 16-game suspension from the NFL (that’s a full year’s worth of games, for you non-football fans).
Williams at that point took his under-appreciated talents north to Canada and played for the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts. He claimed he “found himself” during this time and returned to Miami in 2007 while following a strict drug-test regimen imposed by the NFL.

As if all this wasn’t enough, back in 2008 Williams told the Miami Herald that he had to “fight off temptation” not to smoke marijuana during the Dolphins’ week off, reports the sports blog Sons Of Bill Simmons. Apparently, thanks to the Man Upstairs and meditation, Ricky successfully fought off the unholy urge to smoke the devil’s weed — that time.

Ricky Williams’ mugshot from 2007: What, me high?

He said having some extra free time was the primary reason for his weed temptation. “It’s greater because, like, Thursday, coach told us we had Friday off, so automatically your mind, which is so constrained since training camp began — every day is a grind, it’s a grind, it’s a grind — and then Coach says ‘you’re free.’ And the mind says, ‘I’m free, what can I do?’
“So there was definitely an urge,” Williams said. “But I just thought about what I have to lose and it was easy. The urge didn’t last very long.
“I’ve done a lot of work at understanding myself a little bit more,” Williams claimed. “so I recognize [the urge]was just a result of the feeling of being free, and I was just trying to maximize it. And I realize that really enjoy meditating and when I can go home and sit in my room and meditate, I can get the same feeling.”
Last year, at age 33, Williams rushed for 673 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry for the Dolphins. Over the summer, in the last off-season, he became a Baltimore Raven.
But it seems Ricky’s still a little sensitive about his checkered pass with cannabis, and he definitely doesn’t want to be teased about it.
“One of the reasons I don’t tweet much is cause the weed jokes get kinda old,” Williams tweeted plaintively on Friday.
So apparently Williams wants Ravens fans to lay off the high humor.
Some of you bad, bad potheads will undoubtedly tweet your weed jokes to Williams’ Twitter account at http://twitter.com/#!/RickyWilliams, and forsooth! I’m powerless to stop you.
