Elijah Dukes was arrested after allegedly trying to eat a bag of marijuana

Former Major League outfielder Elijah Dukes was arrested in Florida early Thursday after he allegedly tried to eat a bag of marijuana, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Dukes, 27, who played for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2003 to 2007, then the Washington Nationals from 2008 to 2010, was pulled over about 1 a.m. in Tampa “after he committed a traffic violation,” an officer wrote in the arrest report, reports the Tampa Bay Times. The police report does not specify the violation.

Cops said they saw a “small bag” of marijuana on Dukes’ lap, which they claim he put in his mouth as if he was going to swallow it.
Police claim that after they forcibly removed the bag of weed from Elijah’s mouth and took him into custody, they noticed a marijuana blunt “resting on his right ear.”
Dukes was charged with “tampering with physical evidence,” possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a valid license.
He was held overnight with bail set at $4,750, reports Fox Sports, which added that “his career was plagued by behavioral issues.”
Records show he has been arrested five times in the past year, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The Tampa Bay Tribune went back a little farther, and perhaps down a little lower, reporting that Dukes has been arrested “dozens of times since 2001,” when he attended Hillsborough High School in Tampa.
Most of the charges were either dismissed or not pursued by authorities.
