Accused international marijuana smuggler Nickolas Leivas came close to successfully landing at the harbor in Newport Beach last June, but he’s now in the custody of U.S. marshals and facing federal narcotics transportation charges because of his own stupidity.

Missouri Republicans might pass a bill that would allow cannabidiol oil – a form of medical marijuana – for people with severe epilepsy, but the restrictions on it are so tight that marijuana reform advocates are not exactly thrilled.

Earlier this month we got the 2013 numbers for how many marijuana dispensaries in the city of L.A. have filed to pay a special city collective tax. It reflects how many weed retailers are in L.A. And it was higher than any other number we had seen in nearly five years: 1,140. This despite repeated city crackdowns and a new law, passed last year, that limits the number of shops in town to the 135 or fewer that were legit during a 2007 city “moratorium.”

All signs point toward Floridians approving a medical marijuana proposal on November’s ballot, but the legislature could ease the Sunshine State toward some legalized pot all on their own during this month’s session. One measure, which would kick start research funding into medical marijuana and legalize a non-euphoric strain for epilepsy patients, passed through a House committee with no opposition late last week.
Despite having approval from Health Canada, Tweed Marijuana says a shipment of herb grown by private B.C. growers previously licensed to grow cannabis was seized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police over the weekend.
All of this after Tweed invited the mounties to examine the shipment. Only in Canada are people nice enough to invite the police over to check out their quasi-legal operations.
The White House is open to changing marijuana from a Schedule 1 controlled substance, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Friday, but any change would have to come from the U.S. House. The move wouldn’t necessarily legalize cannabis, but it would make it easier for medical studies of the plant to be conducted as well as give state-legal pot businesses the ability to take federal tax deductions they currently are not allowed to take.

Thirteen producers have registered to legally grow hemp in Colorado in the month since registration began, according to the state Department of Agriculture. However, those thirteen producers hold a total of twenty registrations, as several of them are registered to grow in more than one location or for more than one purpose. Ten of the registrations are for commercial purposes, while the other ten are for research and development. The Denver Westword spoke with three producers, who told the paper about their plans for planting marijuana’s sober stepsister.

A proposal in the state legislature could mean DUIs for drivers who aren’t stoned but who toked a few days ago.It would also hit motorists with even a trace of such prescription drugs as Ambien, Vicodin and even phentermine, a diet drug, with DUI cases if they’re stopped by cops who think they’re impaired.
Medical marijuana supporters are aghast. And they might have good reason to be.

Good news medical marijuana patients of Connecticut: medical marijuana dispensaries will be opening in Branford, Bridgeport, Bristol, Hartford, Montville and South Windsor in the near future.
The state gave out the six licenses yesterday afternoon – the first issued in the state so far. The shops expect to open by the summer when licensed producers can get their first harvest out.
