Last Saturday the first-ever Radical March and Helsinki Smokeout was held by pro-cannabis advocates in Finland.

At 4:20 p.m., a big group of people lit up joints, bongs and pipes in front of the Parliament Building in Helsinki to support, as the organizers stated, “…decriminalization of the use of cannabis, possession of small quantities and farming for personal use to adults.”

The march, organized by Defenders of Nature (Luonnon Puolustajat), started from Hesperia Park at 4 p.m., gathering a crowd of about 200 to 300 people from all over Finland, journalist/activist Alexandra Sandbäck told Toke of the Town on Tuesday.

“Some of the participants arriving by bus from Pori were held up by police outside the city center for what was called a ‘routine control’ of tires, logs, and whatever else,” Sandbäck told us. “After 30 minutes, they let the bus continue on after giving the driver a fine for something minor. The bus went straight to the Parliament Building where people were getting ready to light up.”

Rep. Paul Costa denies that he was smoking marijuana in the parking lot outside a Steelers game.

A western Pennsylvania lawmaker stands accused of smoking marijuana while tailgating last month in the parking lot outside a Pittsburgh Steelers football game.

Pittsburgh police claim State Rep. Paul Costa, 51, was caught sharing a joint with another man in the parking lot of Heinz Field on October 3. Undercover Officer Alex Lee Myers claims he saw Costa (D-Wilkins) and another man passing the joint between them, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. (Since the Ravens beat the Steelers 17-14 that day, who could be mad at these guys for “allegedly” dulling the pain with a little herbal medicine?)

“He adamantly denies that he smoked any marijuana,” said Costa’s attorney, Phil DiLucente. “No narcotics of any kind were found on him. In fact, he detests marijuana,” DiLucente added.

Myers and police Sgt. Steve Matakovich were walking through the parking lot when they said they saw Costa and Mitchell Brourman, 50, of Edgewood, “smoking and passing between them a hand-rolled white cigarette,” while standing next to a 2008 white GMC Yukon.

Myers claimed he could smell “the overpowering scent of burning marijuana coming from the smoke surrounding both Brourman and Costa.”

San Francisco’s 4th Annual S.F. Medical Cannabis Competition, The Patient’s Choice, was held Sunday.

Now that Toke of the Town‘s Northern California correspondent, Jack Rikess, has sufficiently recovered from the festivities, here’s his report.

Don’t be too hard on Mr. Rikess. Judges at the competition — including our hard-working correspondent — had to sample more than 50 cannabis strains and products.

It’s always a good sign when you can smell the party from blocks away.

The day and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for San Francisco’s 4th Annual S.F. Medical Cannabis Competition, The Patient’s Choice. After some delays including moving the cannabis flavored festivities to a new location at the last moment (due to law enforcement objections), the Bacchanal of Buds went off without a hitch for the red-eyed competition goers.

New Zealand cannabis protesters targeted Wellington Central police station on Thursday

Wellington, New Zealand police will decide Friday whether to charge cannabis legalization activists who pushed a shopping cart full of burning marijuana into the central police station foyer.

Officers will study CCTV footage showing the shopping cart loaded with smoking weed being pushed into the central police station at the height of a legalization protest, reports 3 News.

The protest, part of the Armistice Tour, a nationwide push for cannabis law reform, began Thursday morning with more than 100 people gathering on Parliament’s front lawn to promote the benefits of marijuana over legal substances like alcohol and tobacco.

The protesters gathered outside the Wellington police station about 6 p.m., when the “smoke bomb” was pushed into the foyer, according to Julian Crawford, an activist and candidate with the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party.

I’m thinking Major League Baseball didn’t approve of this message. But I do.

One of the most prominent — and fun — story lines around this year’s World Series is the the plentitude of pot at the Giants’ ballpark, which shouldn’t come as any surprise to anyone who knows San Francisco.

Proponents of the upcoming Prop 19 marijuana legalization measure — which would tax and regulate cannabis in California — were spotted marching around with signs featuring a picture of Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, reports ‘Duk at Big League Stew.

Lincecum got busted with pot just last year after he was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 about four miles north of the Oregon border almost exactly a year ago, on October 30, 2009.

Police found 3.3 grams of pot on Lincecum after smelling marijuana as the pitcher rolled down the window of his 2006 Mercedes. The baseball star reportedly complied with a request to hand over the pot and a marijuana pipe from the car’s center console.

George Michael Released From Prison After 4 Weeks For Cannabis

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go: George Michael’s a free man again after being discovered slumped over the wheel of his car and serving half of an eight-week prison sentence for DUI and cannabis.

Singer George Michael has been released from prison in the U.K., after serving four weeks of an eight-week sentence for DUI and possession of marijuana.

The 47-year-old pop star, freed after serving half of his sentence, told reporters he “just wants to start again” and that it was “fantastic” to be free on “a beautiful day,” reports BBC News.

“I just want to way thank you for everybody who has supported me in there,” the singer told reporters outside his home in north London.

Michael was arrested in July after being found slumped at the wheel of his Land Rover in Hampstead, north London, after a Gay Pride parade on July 4.

National Guard Soldier Faces Court-Martial For Medical Marijuana

Spc. Richelle Golden got a doctor’s authorization to legally use medical marijuana — and her caregiver was her former Guard commander. But, apparently in a cynical attempt to deny her retirement benefits, she faces a court-martial anyway.

Spc. Richelle Golden of the Oregon Army National Guard suffers from two incredibly painful autoimmune diseases. When she got to Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state back in February, she arrived in a wheelchair, expecting to stay a few weeks and be medically retired from service. She immediately reported that she legally used cannabis to combat pain and nausea, and produced her Oregon medical marijuana card.

Now it’s five months later, and Golden is still at Joint Base Lewis-McChord facing court-martial, caught between the laws of her home state, which allow medicinal marijuana use with a doctor’s authorization, and the U.S. Army, which forbids it under any circumstances, reports Julie Sullivan at The Oregonian.

Alabama Man Dies In Jail After Being Arrested For Marijuana

Jacob Jordan, 32, died in the Baldwin County jail due to inadequate medical treatment after being arrested for marijuana.

Family members of a 32-year-old Alabama man who died in his jail cell last month a week after being arrested for possession of marijuana said they tried to warn officers about his fragile health, but were ignored.

Jacob Ashley Jordan was found dead in his cell at the Baldwin County Corrections Center at about 1 a.m. July 9, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, reports Connie Baggett at the Mobile Press-Register.

Jordan had a “pre-existing medical condition,” according to Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Anthony Lowery, and had been moved into the jail’s medical wing. Lowery claimed that the inmate had received medical treatment from nurses.

Jordan, who lived in Eight Mile, Ala., was found dead in his cell, according to Lowery.

The officer refused to give details, citing privacy laws that protect medical information, but did say there was “no evidence of any physical injury.”

George Michael Busted In London For Marijuana

Musician George Michael was charged Wednesday with marijuana possession and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stemming from an incident last month.

The 47-year-old former Wham! singer reported to a police station in north London’s Camden Town on Wednesday, reports Christopher Brocklebank at PinkNews.

The charges result from an incident when Michael was arrested after driving his Range Rover into a branch of photo developers Snappy Snaps in Hampstead in the early morning hours of July 4. The singer had reportedly been attending the London Gay Pride celebrations the previous night.
