​Hold the phone, we have a new entrant for Mother of the Year. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman trying to visit her son in a juvenile probation camp Saturday after they found marijuana and what they claimed was a fake medical marijuana card while searching her purse, according to department officials.

Rhonda J. Gonzales, 44, of Pomona, was visiting Camp Glenn Rockey, a camp for juvenile offenders in San Dimas, to visit her son who is a ward at the camp, according to the Sheriff’s Department, reports Rick Rojas at the Los Angeles Times.

Marijuana Improves Mental Sharpness In Middle-Aged Men: Study

​Not only does smoking marijuana not “burn you out,” but it’s downright good for your brain. Yet more scientific evidence — this time, that it actually appears to improve cognitive functioning among middle-aged men — is now available, thanks to a new medical study.

Researchers looked at a large sample of 8,992 men who “used drugs,” mostly cannabis, at age 42 and then again at age 50, reports Dennis Romero at LA Weekly. The men were tested to measure their level of brain functioning.
Surprise, surprise — the Brits who had used illegal drugs did just as well — or slightly better! — than the chaps who had never “used drugs” at all.
When current and past drug users were lumped together as one group, their scores tended to be better than those of non-users. That advantage was small, researchers said, and might be due to the fact that people who have tried drugs tend to be better educated than those who haven’t.
“A positive association was observed between ever (past or current) illicit drug use and cognitive functioning,” the study’s authors concluded in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

​Since it is becoming increasingly obvious that President Obama is going to be asked about marijuana every single time there’s a forum where the public is free to submit questions, it would make sense for the Commander in Chief to bone up on the subject, and at least go to the trouble to prepare some intelligent responses.

Apparently the Administration doesn’t feel that it’s worth their time to do that, though. Obama seems to actually be getting worse at talking about cannabis, as pointed out by Scott Morgan of StoptheDrugWar.com.
“This latest exchange is just embarrassing,” Morgan writes of the President’s latest sidestepping of a cannabis question.

​A courier delivering medical marijuana to what he thought was a dispensary was mugged for $20,000 worth of cannabis by three men, according to police in Fullerton, California.

Police said the trio set up a fake medical marijuana dispensary in a commercial building in Fullerton, even painting a green cross on the outside wall of the building, reports Dennis Romero at LA Weekly.
“These suspects had spent some time putting this ruse together, putting the order in and finding a building that worked for what they were trying to do,” said Sgt. Andrew Goodrich of the Fullerton Police Department, reports Eileen Frere at ABC 7.

Cali Bill Would OK Medical Marijuana Crackdowns By Cities

​With numerous lawsuits pending across California against cities that try to crack down on or ban medical marijuana dispensaries, a new bill aims to make it clear that municipalities are allowed to tell pot shops when, where and how they can do business.

The bill, AB 1300, just passed the California Assembly, reports Dennis Romero at L.A. Weekly. It was introduced by Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield (D-Los Angeles).
According to the bill, localities can adopt “local ordinances that regulate the location, operation, or establishment of a medical marijuana cooperative or collective…”

Federal Agents Raid San Fernando Valley Marijuana Grow Ops

More than 5,000 plants were reportedly seized from hydroponic grow operations in the San Fernando Valley on Wednesday.

​Federal agents reportedly raided several medical marijuana operations in the San Fernando Valley on Wednesday. Agents from multiple federal agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, assisted by the Los Angeles Police Department, uncovered pot growing warehouses, according to spokesperson Laura Eimiller.

“Multiple search warrants were executed,” Eimiller said. “It involved multiple agencies including the FBI, DEA, LAPD and the ATF and ICE.”
One law enforcement source told Dennis Romero at LA Weekly that more than 5,000 plants were seized, along with “luxury cars” and at least $200,000 in cash. The raided locations were said to all be indoor hydroponic growing operations.

​San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano wants to propose an “omnibus cannabis bill” to better oversee California’s booming medical marijuana industry, which the attorney general’s guidelines so far have dictated must be nonprofit.

According to Ammiano, the radically different approaches to dispensaries — which are welcomed in some cities, but raided in others — shows the need for clear, statewide regulations to create a more “cohesive response.”

​Los Angeles marijuana dispensaries are abuzz about an email pitch from a company that says — sort of — that a pro-cannabis celebrity endorsement from someone “like Snoop Dogg” could increase business.

Many are wondering if the business proposal is real, reports Dennis Romero at our sister Village Voice Media site LA Weekly — as in, would such a big star really do this for cash?

Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich: Is this hothead serving up quick revenge to dispensaries that dare criticize him?

​A Los Angeles police raid of a Venice medical marijuana dispensary last week — which occurred at a time when L.A. has said it will hold off on pot shop enforcement — happened just hours after an activist criticized the City Attorney on a radio broadcast from the store.

Host Zuma Dogg played audio of his Thursday web radio show for the LA Weekly, reports Dennis Romero. He said, in part, “I’d like to send this one out to Carmen Trutanich” and called the City Attorney “incompetent” and a “moron” for his handling of the city’s medical marijuana ordinance.
Zuma Dogg described his “broadcasting live” location as a Venice collective with “Green” in its title.
