Up In Smoke

The pot flick has practically become a genre unto itself. Stoner movies, expressly designed for enjoyment under herbally enhanced conditions, should have their own aisle at Blockbuster.
While we’re waiting for that to happen, though, let’s take a moment to bask in the euphoric glow of accomplishment. Cannabis cinema has established a track record of success and marketability much like the herb itself.
Given the passionate loyalty potheads feel towards their very favorite stoner movies, I’d have to be ape-shit crazy to put myself in the line of fire, subjecting myself to the ire, the scorn and the second-guessing of my blunted but opinionated brethren.
So if you think I’m high enough to even try that… OK, OK. Good point.
Here are my Top 10.

HempCon 2010 Los Angeles is already a huge success, with thousands of festive attendees on the convention floor. Stay tuned, San Francisco… your turn is in April.

A three-day celebration of all things cannabis opens Friday in downtown Los Angeles.

HempCon 2010 Los Angeles, at the L.A. Convention Center, will host exhibitors from across the country who’ll be showcasing products and services relating to medical marijuana and the movement to legalize pot, reports the Los Angeles Daily News.
Smoking and marijuana won’t be allowed at the event.
“There’s not going to be any cannabis — but we’re trying to spread the word,” said Cheryl Shuman, executive director of Beverly Hills NORML 90210, a branch of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Vegetable matter is sprayed with synthetic cannabinoid JWH-018 and marketed under the brandname “K2”

Federal agents are cracking down in imports of a “synthetic marijuana” as the substance, legal in 49 states (everywhere except soon-to-be-illegal Kansas), gains popularity nationwide.

Officials claim Food and Drug Administration regulations bar the important and sale of JWH-018, a synthetic cannabinoid, “because it is not a tested and approved drug,” reports Peter Mucha at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Eighty-five parcels have already been seized at Philadelphia International Airport after tests proved positive for JWH-018, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Officials said the parcels were arriving from Amsterdam at a UPS facility at the airport.

420girls.com
“What do you mean, what would I do for a lighter?”

Marijuana activist/visionary Rob Griffin set the standard, simply because he was there before almost anyone else. When he launched 420 Girls in 1993, there weren’t any other sites centered around photos of naked women smoking weed.

The goal, Griffin says, was always to draw more people into the legalization movement through the beauty, glamor and sex appeal of the nude female figure.
The site features nude women smoking pot, posing with cannabis paraphernalia, marijuana plants and buds, posing in dispensaries, fields and grow rooms.
While the formula has certainly caught on — there are many others like it today — 420girls.com was the original.
Griffin’s mission came into being as a result of a marijuana possession conviction from 1992, while Rob was living in Maryland. Because he was then considered, by law, to be a felon due to drug-related charges, his right to vote was permanently suspended.

Hey, let’s outlaw everything that even looks a little like marijuana!

Kansas may be millions of dollars in the red and facing a host of real problems, but the Legislature there has a rather curious sense of priorities, passing a law against fake marijuana.
The Kansas House of Representatives endorsed legislation Tuesday to ban the ersatz weed, sold as incense under the brand name K2, reports David Klepper at the Kansas City Star.
Police say the substance is increasingly being used by teens and others looking for the effects of marijuana but whom, for whatever reason, cannot get pot.

A Florida man has agreed to plead guilty to selling, over the Internet, a powdered drink mix designed to help truck drivers, pilots, train engineers and others pass federally mandated urine tests to detect drugs.

Stephen Sharp claimed the mix is 100 percent effective in blocking the urine tests from showing metabolites of common recreational drugs, including marijuana.

The California Marijuana Report™, a cutting edge report for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws featuring California cannabis news, music and culture, has joined forces with Beverly Hills NORML.

“The CMR will broadcast from the elegant and well-connected NORML 90210,” said host Eric Brenner. “We are thrilled to be joining forces with such visionaries as Cheryl Shuman and Fred Rhoades, who share my passion to legalize marijuana.”

encycloweedia4iphone.com
Encycloweedia works with all iPhones and iPod Touches running version 2.0 software or later.

A Dallas architecture company found business to be a little too slow for their liking. Unlike many others, they did something creative — and lucrative — about it. They created “Encycloweedia,” an iPhone app that serves as a one-stop resource for potheads.

Since Hub City Productions released the application in November, it’s been one of the top 20 reference apps on Apple’s site, reports Patrick Williams at the Dallas Observer.
The $1.99 app is being downloaded about 200 times a day, according to Hub City’s Robert Romano. “It’s blowing our minds,” Romano said. “It’s crazy.”
Romano said there’s a serious side to Encycloweedia: Countless seriously ill people — not necessarily recreational smokers — who don’t know much about marijuana and its effects need an easy-to-find source of good information.
“The head shops and dispensaries are just full of attitude,” Romano said. The app, according to Romano, “is like Pot Smoking For Dummies.”
Among example of useful information provided by Encycloweedia are marijuana recipes. Pot-naive patients might be too ill to smoke, but might have no idea how to cook with the herb.
